About the cruise
From Southampton sail to Corunna, where you will find a mixture of old and new. Named the ‘Crystal City’ because of the glass-enclosed balconies, which adorn the tall apartment buildings facing the harbour, you will also discover nearby the major goal of medieval pilgrims, Santiago de Compostela. The paradise island of Madeira has become famous for its mild weather, fine wines and levada walks. However, the only way to fully appreciate Madeira is to visit one of its flower gardens. For anyone interested in rare or tropical flowers, Funchal’s Botanical Gardens are not to be missed.
Mile for mile, La Palma is more mountainous than Tibet. The result is a landscape of imposing beauty, and, of course, the hilly terrain has ensured that this is the least developed and therefore the most authentic of all the Canaries.
Gran Canaria is known as the ‘miniature continent’ due to its varying climates and landscapes. Its heart is the cosmopolitan, historic and prosperous port city of
Las Palmas and here you can see where Columbus stayed on his way to and from discovering the New World. Tenerife, largest of the Canary Islands, enjoys a warm and sunny climate all year round. An island of contrasts, you will find volcanic landscapes in the south and verdant scenery and mile upon mile of banana, potato and tomato plantations in the north.
The unique atmosphere and glittering sea combine to nickname Cadiz ‘the cup of silver’. The old, central quarter of Cadiz is famous for its picturesque charm, and many of the buildings reflect the city’s overseas links. The cathedral is worth a visit, and further afield, Seville beckons, with its flamencos, bullfights and flower-filled patios. Lisbon nestles against seven hills on the north side of the Tagus River. This vibrant capital has retained many of its classical squares, stately buildings and picturesque quarters. Enjoy a relaxing tram ride through the metropolis, passing the Parliament, Cathedral, Alfama District and Santa Luzia Belvedere. Before returning to Southampton tour the beautiful medieval city of Vigo and, nearby, see the Cathedral of Santiago – one of the most important shrines in Christendom. Try the local fresh seafood served in one of the many excellent restaurants and stroll around the maze of cobbled streets in Bayona’s old quarters. You will arrive home on Friday 31 October.
