The cities of the Baltic win visitors’ hearts with their magical mix of fairytale palaces, imperial treasures, cobbled lanes and stunning architecture. Discover the magic of Copenhagen and the delightful Tivoli Gardens, where you can soar above the city on a Ferris Wheel. Discover the history of Denmark at the magnificent Christiansborg Palace, the National Museum and at Kronberg Castle – the former Elsinore of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. Stockholm is a wonderful city to explore, an elegant tapestry of canals and lakes woven around 14 separate islands. Stroll around the quaint streets and see the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace.
Helsinki, the Finnish capital since 1812, is known as the ‘Daughter of the Baltic’. The striking onion-shaped cupolas of the Uspensky Cathedral are just one example of the Soviet influence on a country which achieved independence less than 100 years ago. A prolonged stay in St. Petersburg allows you time to really explore this city. By day admire the incredible treasury of art, sculpture and jewellery that makes up the collection of the Hermitage, housed in splendour in the former Winter Palace. By night, treat yourself to a evening at the ballet or a lively folkloric show. Estonia’s port of Tallinn is another fascinating medieval capital. This multi-faceted jewel of a city and its architecture will have your eyes on stalks, from the spectacular domes of the Nevski Russian Orthodox Cathedral to the Baroque Toompea Castle.
A charming market town, Kalundborg enjoys the driest and sunniest climate in Denmark. Its history goes back to the days when Vikings used its harbour to set off on their expeditions. Medieval times saw the Danish kings assemble in the Castle of Kalundborg for their political debates and although the 14th century castle is no longer standing, there are still a number of medieval buildings in the old part of town. Oslo is a modern city, with an eclectic mix of ancient castles, frescoed 18th century houses, vast parks and glittering lakes. Must-sees include the incredible Vigeland Sculptue Park and the Viking Ship Museum. Zeebrugge is your gateway to the lovely city of Bruges. The centre is a showcase of glorious Medieval and Baroque architecture, the streets criss-crossed with a maze of canals. Flanders lace and delicious chocolate make popular souvenirs for you to take home. From here you sail home, arriving 9 September.
