We are cruising the Caribbean in Jan/Feb and as a qualified diver I am hoping to do a few dives.  Can anyone tell me whether it is worth taking my own equipment, i.e. is there anywhere on board to dry it or should I just hire it?

Sorry to sidetrack but my daughter is at Plymouth University and she has just qualified as a diver.  She wants to the P.A.D.I course now, what do you think ?

By the way, I know how much stuff you need, I have seen her dry and wet suit, tanks, masks etc etc.

Expensive hobby !

Not very clear if you are doing a fly cruise or sailing from UK

If sailing from uk you would have to store your equipment in your cabin or ask your very nice cabin steward if they have storage.

If doing fly cruise would have thought dive gear alone would be above your baggage allowance so would suggest hiring equipment from dive shops out there.

Bev, my hubby usually dives and he takes his own mask and computer but just uses the dive company's equipment. We never have enough weight allowance for him to take anything else

If you want to dive I would certainly recommend taking your own mask and computer (wearing the computer if necessary).  Personally I would always take my own regs (if you have them) - I'm used to them, I know when they were last serviced and I know that the mouthpiece has only been in my mouth.  Dive centres are meant to sterilise them after hiring out but having dived all over the world I don't know many who do.  If you are flying the weight of the regs may be prohibitive, but if you are going from Southampton it should be no problem.  I did have one little bit of hassle at Southampton though.  I have a very small safety knife (blade is the length of my thumb) attached to my regs.  This caused all sorts of problems going through the scanner even when I tried to point out that their steak knives supplied at dinner were 3 times as big.  In the end they held the regs for me after my first day's diving and gave them me as I got off for the second day.  On returning I gave them the knife so I could wash my regs.  They returned it to me on the Saturday lunch prior to disembarking SUNDAY morning.

It is well worth doing some internet research before hand for where you want to go and you can often make arrangements for kit hire and even pickup from the boat before you go.
