We will be on Azura, though I understand the layout is the same as Ventura.  I have been studying the deck plans. Do I assume that we first arrive on F deck near to 'Reception'.  Do we go up a gang plank or steps?

Deck Number access can vary because of tides.

There is a very large, enclosed canterlevered walkway from the terminal buildings to the ship that you board with.

Various zig zags and long corridors, with your wheeled luggage making a racket on the wooden slats, is a "feature".

When we boarded Arcadia at the Ocean Teminal last month, we boarded on the Prom deck, a first for us!

I didn't think about the tides affecting the boarding deck! I've obviously got a lot to learn. It must make finding your way around even harder if you keep boarding on different decks, and presumably from different sides of the ship.

EmmaHC,

On most ships I have been on (and I admit Arcadia is the only current P&O ship I haven't been on) passengers tend to board on the lower decks - on Oriana usually decks 4 & 5 as an example - and the prom deck is usually about mid level on the ship - again on Oriana this is deck 7 so not that far above the usual embarkation decks.

When I did my ships visit to Independence of the Seas last month we were embarked via the prom deck which was good except for the chill as we waited in line to have our photo's taken.

I can never understand why they don't make the walkways of rubber instead of wooden slats it would be much quieter with my wheelie bag when walking to embark on the ship I have often wonder this as I walk along if they can use it in hospitals then why not on these walkways?

I wonder if the reason for using wood instead of rubber for the walkways is something to do with salt/sea air?  Perhaps the atmostphere in the local environment means that the rubber would perish etc?  Otherwise was the decision in favour of wood made in connection with fire hazard guidelines? For instance, if wood burns it is not so much of a hazard compared with burning rubber.

At ports with a significant tidal range, it may be necessary for the crew to move gangways from one deck to another during the day.  So, you go off on an excursion in the morning from one deck and may have to use a different one when you return.

They will often deploy more than one gangway from differing decks to provide extra capacity, depending on the facilities at the port and their own equipment.  On Arcadia, embarcation hatches are fitted to decks 1 and 2 and the use of deck 3 (Promenade deck) is also common.

The choice of decks to use is the Captain's and he will consult with the Security Officer (SECO) over the exact positioning of the ship.  Where a shore "airbridge" is used, the port staff will also advise on the positioning and deck usage.
