Will a black & grey evening dress be acceptable or does it have to be pure black?

The themed evenings really are just a suggestion, not everyone joins in but B &W  is the best supported. Easy for the men, most just wear the usual DJ gear some do the opposite with white jacket /black shirt. Some ladies have a special outfit but a lot accessorise existing dresses. So really wear what you want but try to conform without worrying about it.

Ideally people should wear black AND white in my opinion. Alternatively White OR Black; however some, as always do not participate at all. Elements of Grey appearing seem to be more acceptable than other colours. I expect others have a wide spread of views.

The B&W Formal evening has the highest buy-in from passengers vs any other theme night.

Varberg, lets be honest us men folk won't even notice what you are wearing .. the lady folk, now that is different, they will be able to tell you which retailer/catalogue it came from (and the page number), the price, when it was on offer, for how much and that it does not go with your underwear (although how they figure that one out beats me). ;-)

Black-and-white is well supported but I have also seen various colours, creams, greys etc.  so you should not (or be made to) feel out of place in your suggested outfit.  On one occasion Julie wore a black dress but as she walked and it caught the light it shimmered 'red'.

I wish P&O would make it clear in their pre cruise information that B&W is always a formal night.  Many new cruisers are not aware of this.  I personally think this is the only themed night that should be adhered to.

Tropical night is fine but get rid of pirate night, and 60/70's, Country and western because hardly anyone bothers.

In the old days (1960's) Black and White night was not the formal occasion that is is now, due to the high amount of other formal nights (at least 5 or 6 in a 14 night cruise).

The new cruiser seems to forget that.

Some 20 years ago or so, when football shirts were very few and far between, one of my cruise friends proudly showed me her new Newcastle United shirt.  I suggested that she should wear it on black and white night (it is black and white stripes for non football people) She said she would, but only if I would wear a red bow tie.  I didn't have one, so I bought one from the Arcadia shop and to this day, I always wear it on black and white nights.

There is an amusing picture of her taken with the Captain at the Black and White night with her football shirt on.  She did take it off shortly after.
