I was texting my dad yesterday and he told me that Aurora had stopped to rescue a ship on fire just off Cephalonia.  He said there was helicopters and Aurora life boats searching the sea for people.  When it got dark last night there was air planes dropping flares to carry on the rescue.

Does anyone else have any information on this as i know the ship will miss Athens.

Cheers

Leigh

I was speaking to my son on board when the captain came on the loud speaker system and said that Aurora would be retracing the stricken ship's path as there were still people missing. He asked passengers to stay silent on their balconies and listen for any noises and to report immediately via the telephone in their cabins.

My son said that the ship was really eerily quiet until the search was called off at about 9pm. He knew it would make them late into Athens.

Hi,

Yes, we were on this cruise when this happened. We'd left Cephalonia and had been sailing a few hours when we stopped. We were having dinner and saw a small boat floating past us (about 10 feet away) on fire. It apparently hit the back of Aurora. We stopped for approxiately 3 - 3 1/2 hours whilst we took part in search and rescue. Several helicopters and other ships involved. We were released from the search about 10.30pm once there was other sufficient vessels to continue to search. We later heard two british people were found in the water about 3am. Got to Athens (Pireaus) about 10am the next day, a few hours late.

The captain told us the guy emailed him to apologise for delaying the cruise and thanked us for our assistance.
