The ride to it was along small, bumpy and winding roads. The small 'bus',I use that conservatively, stopped along the way and the various flora and fauna were pointed out to us. Nothing exciting bt we had never seen grapefruit growing wild before.

Then the tram. Eight people per tram in a 4X2 seating arrangement, with a guide on board explaining the various plants that you see. Not boring at all. There had been devastation quite recently after a hurricane and to see the size of some of these after just 2 years was amazing.

It is very quiet on board the tram, it moves very slowly, and at one point we had the option, which we took, to get off and walk through the rainforest for a short way. The rope bridge was a treat and the stepsthat they had made out of coconut palm bark were very sturdy. We then got back on the tram.

I would do this trip again, anywhere it was available, purely becas we were amazed at the state of the rainforest after it's devastation and how quickly it had recovered. To see one in a more advanced statewould be mindblowing I would think.

BTW,

Local bus, basic seats, no air con, bone rattler, but we had  a great time. It was the only place the mozzies were  supposed to be a problem but we covered up, applied the stuff and were OK. I am a big attraction for mozzies so if they didn't get me here they never will again!!

Just been looking at excursions for our next cruise and they do an aeriel tram in St. Lucia.........Hmmmmm. :-)

You can see that we rated it.

Extract from 02/2004 cruise review of Volendam (HAL):

Day 6: Dominica – Roseau – By far the prettiest and friendliest of all the islands on this cruise. Went on a mountain bike tour from below the 2nd highest point down to the coast. Tropical rainforest. Saw a dead boa constrictor on the road side. Ate bananas fresh off the tree. Went around the market stalls in the afternoon – what charming, graceful, lovely ladies the Domincan women are! Had a drink at a smart
water-hole and discovered frozen Daiqueris for the first time – wow! – 5/5

Thanks for the replies about trips to the falls.

The aerial tram sounds decent in Dominica, but we did the one in St. Lucia last April and I would definitely not recommend it!!!   The Tram is safe enough - you are more closed in than on an Alpine chair lift and there was no rope bridge. Also the perspective of the forest from above, rather than from the ground was different and the drive to the tram was ok but nothing special.

BUT the girl who was our guide was sort of OK with the patter she had obviously learnt off by heart - popular names for things and a tale of Rastafarians taking the area over, but she was unable to answer any questions and had no botanical knowledge whatsoever.  She also shouted at the top of her voice which somewhat spoilt the whole point of being in a peaceful natural environment and would have scared off any wildlife present within a mile.  At one stage she even started a (shouting) conversation with another guide in another tram!  She also had a very offhand manner and didn't even respond to any pleasantries (even a smile) she obviously was just not interested at all.  I think the tram was also used as a means of transport for people doing the hipline trip (which we could hear from our tram) and I got the impression she was more interested in that, but had been drawn into guiding our group.

After the trip we were schedule to go for a 'forest walk' (which was basically around an extremely short pathway in an area of cultivated garden by the place we got on and off the tram).  Then we were given our drinks and immediately told that it was time to return to the coach!!  We were the last group, but it was not our fault we had been waiting longer to get on the tram.  We insisted on drinking our drinks and took whole five minutes before returning to the coach, when we were then made to feel it was our fault that other people had been waiting in the coach for  some time - they should not have got anyone back into the coach until the trip was complete.  Of course the promised 'shopping for souvenirs' time did not exist at all!!

Well, writing this has been very therapeutic and I hope a warning to others.  It is an expensive trip and we were very annoyed at what P&O produced for the cost.  I also want to point out that my other postings have been very positive (which you can search for) - I am not a grump - the trip in St Lucia was c**p.

Hi, We did the aerial Tram it was good and interesting, i have to say a little walking to be done and the guide is so informative and interesting the walk is over a cane bridge and on rugged path.

When you arrive at the end of your trip, you are given a one small cup of rum punch, i am afraid to there was not enough of it, bearing in mind i am no alcoholic, but other excursion we did the rum punch was free flowing.

Enjoy your excursions.

Just to clarify - I did not mean to imply that the aerial tram in Dominica is not worthwhile, but that I would not advise doing that trip in St. Lucia.  I also note that P&O allows 4 hours for the Dominica version but only 3.5 hours for the St. Lucia one, yet they charge the same for both trips.  The coach journey to and from the tram station was quite lengthy in St. Lucia as well and that was just a coach ride.  They also bill the forest walk in St. Lucia as 20 mins but it was not even 5 mins and our guide just walked us round in a hurry.

Yes it is a good idea for a trip, but do the Dominica one.

We have done both the Aerial Tram and the Trafalgar Falls and Emerald pool in the past and enjoyed both very much.

Buy a rain cape if you are going on the tram when they say rainforest they are not kidding,

dont let that put you of though it is a great experience.

I looked on cruise critic and have booked Titou Gorge plus pools with Eli at Bumpiing tours. There have been good reports of his trips so have my fingers crossed. It sounds pretty good and not too much walking - $40 each including entrance fees and drinks.
