| But Emma, you use pseudo morse code in your signature. That's equally as unintelligible as text speak!

| [quote] .... I like emoticons .... I agree. I certainly need to use them on one international travel site that I frequent as humour and style are rather different when communicating with posters from Oz, USA, Canada, SA etc ..... keeps the lid on things and that is for sure.

| Hi Meg, No, it's not morse code as there are no dashes. I don't think I used dots either. It is simply a signature which I use elsewhere, but in an attempt to not boast or brag I converted the digits. I know what it means, and I am glad to see it - it pleases me and harms nobody. Quite a few people on this Forum have lists of cruises they have taken - I just use a signature which I use elsewhere, which has a list of other things relevant to me. These are not emoticons, they cannot cause any offence; simply something which goes with my signature. The astrisks you mention do not form part of the body of any post, neither do they form any sort of comment. Cheers

I like emoticons, saves waisting a lot of words, which are very often taken out of context.

| Re Emoticons I would add, I think if we had them, it would do away with a lot of the problems we have on this site.

| Hi DerekN, It would be lovely to think so, yes - and in a perfect world maybe. However, I can predict huge squabbles starting up where someone has posted words (which are at best ambiguous and at worst laced with quite sinister double entendre) accompanied by an emoticon. It may be seen as something nice by people who use this facility for innocent purporses, but for those who do not fall within this category I fear it would be a recipe for disaster. Cheers.

| emmaHC The same as it is now then, no change. I think they should at least be given a try, I just happen to think they would work.

| Hi DerekN, Normally I am all in favour of experiments, but then we have to tackle the thorny problems which associate themselves with such an exercise. If this trial went ahead, how would data be collected, how would the assessment be made? Etc. Just how would it be possible to run the trial and gain a satisfactory overview unless the trial was conducted in conjunction with a selection of Forum members? It wouldn't be simply a case of making emoticons available and then sitting back to watch the ensuing fireworks and antics and squabbles (or not) - it would have to be evaluated, and I can't see such an exercise being worthwhile. I can't see it being reliable. Questionnaires would have to be raised - and who is going to be in charge of phrasing the questions - remember, in this type of activity the answers you get which formulate the final results depend entirely on the questions asked and the answer choices made available. I know you mean really well Derek, but I trust you will understand if I stick to my viewpoint. Cheers

| Emma Of course you can stick to your viewpoint, why would I think otherwise. Its just that I belong to another cruise forum, which uses Emoticons, and they have none of the problems you envisage.
