My fiance and I are thinking about going to the Fjords for 7 days for our honeymoon on board Ventura on Sat 17th July 2010. Does anyone know if Fjords cruises in the summertime (before the school holidays actually begin) have lots of children onboard?

I know Venutra is a family ship - we cruised on her in May this year and thought she was fab (so please no Ventura bashing!). We are just concerned that this cruise might be full of children.

I have been told that usually its the Med cruises that have more families - can anyone help/advise? Are we making a good choice?

Thank you :-)

I haven't done the Fjords on a family ship,  but

17 July is still term time in England

the Fjords aren't really a family destination so I suspect there would be fewer children.

As you will have seen, on family ships the children seem to be notable by their absence (being busy elsewhere) anyway.

Cruised:    The Baltic, Norway, Canaries and 4 in the Med.

I really do not think that anyone will be able to answer the question of how many children that there may be on that particular cruise, or any other for that matter.

July is at the start of the school holidays so that in itself gives rise to having children on board. P&O are running this cruise at this time of year on a family ship so they will not be deterring children from going.

The Fjords is probably not the most popular place for a lot of children but they are not the ones choosing, and paying, for the cruise and there are many families that like the cultural experience.

Sorry but I cannot be more helpful. It might be worth emailing P&O and see what their response is.

re the comment above ''I really do not think that anyone will be able to answer the question of how many children that there may be on that particular cruise, or any other for that matter''

Sorry but this is not true, you can be told exactly how many children are onboard by emailing reservations@p&ocruises.co.uk and they will send you a email of exactly how many children are booked on your cruise, with even age break downs; babies/toddlers/young and teenage children.  Ofcourse it will be too early to ask for exact numbers  as the cruise probably isn't fully booked so numbers may change.... but they will tell you now how many are booked so far. For exact numbers email after final deposits are paid.

Saying that, a Fjords cruise is school term time should be  quiet. We had 87 on Oceana in the whitsonholidays...the fjords is not really a child friendly place - a bottle of small coke was £4 in the shops!  And there are no theme parks of beaches to visit!

Jen

On a honeymoon, does it really matter I am asking myself (LOL)

The scenery is spectacular and July can certainly be a very nice time of the year to visit Norway but this destination does attract the more mature and traditional cruiser so you could be the youngest couple on board by a distance. Maybe not so much of an issue, if indeed it is one at all for you both, on Ventura as with say Artemis or Oriana.

We were on Oceana in the Med during the same period in 2007, one of the officers told us there were 416 children on board. We had seen no more than a handful as they are all presumably doing their own thing in allocated parts of the ship or were ashore playing on the beaches etc.

My OH thinks a 12 day fly cruise on Princess Lines to the Greek Islands would be more romantic.

Some posters need to remember there are more than just English state schools holidays to consider.

Many private schools finish at the beginning of July.  Scottish schools will have been on holiday for about a month and all exams are over so older children may be evident.

If you don't want lots of children you do need to book outside the times when they are more likely to be on board.

Thank you everyone :-) I really don't want to sound all "anti-children" or anything, it just wouldn't be ideal for our honeymoon. I have cruised in the past during school holiday and it has been fine - just would prefer a "calmer" and more peaceful experience for this special break...

As for the Fjords themselves - do those of you who've been recommed it?

Thanks again!

As for the Fjords as a destination they are memorable, we went in May this year & were lucky to have wonderful weather, this is not always the case & I doubt if we will hurry back as it is unlikely to be as good again!! We went on Artemis & it was my birthday, didn't go for that, but it was nice anyway.

Thank you for your post ;-)

We originally wanted to have a lovely beach holiday but we both love cruising and we got engaged on Ventura-  so it would be lovely to have our honeymoon onboard too. As I said, just keen to cruise at a time when there aren't too many children onboard. We cruised through the beautiful landscapes near Oslo on our last cruise and it was amazing!!
