No - you book early and get what you want or you book late and take your chances! They wouldn't have enough availability to upgrade all early bookers so how then would you prioritise?

It is difficult to vote in this poll as I am not sure what the questions are as they have been truncated.
But in principle I would say no as you make a decision at some point in time as to what you want/are prepared to pay and you go with it.
Having said that, if I had booked an inside cabin and P&O came along and offered me a suite at no extra cost then I would not turn it down but the reality is that the vast majority of upgrades have to be paid for (admittedly not necessarily at the full cost) and are not often that big an upgrade.
If, however, P&O had an option, say pay an extra £50 and you would be guaranteed an upgrade, then I might consider that.

| I found this difficult to vote, because in the ideal world we would book early and get exactly the cabin etc that we want. Unfortunately in our world, we cannot get travel insurance until about 8 weeks prior to departure so cannot book until then. It is not a case of waiting for a bargain, but the circumstances we find ourselves in. Val

| Val Obviously I do not know your circumstances, but for my next cruise I booked up 6 months ago, to get free drinks package etc, etc. We are not travelling until March, at the moment do not have travel insurance, will arrange that in January 2010 to cover the year. In other words I have booked a cruise without travel insurance in place, I realise I will not be able to reclaim my deposit, via insurance, should anything happen in the meantime.

| Derek, we have done that over the last 3 years with land based holidays and lost a lot of money, because we were unable to travel. On one holiday to Antigua, we not only lost deposits on flights, but also a 25% deposit on a large villa. I can't remember the exact amount, but it was quite a substantial amount. It was then that we decided not to keep throwing money away. We have only been on 2 cruises, both this year, and both times we got balcony cabins, requested dinner sitting and table size. I guess we were lucky both times. My husband has cancer that has spread (although at the moment he is clear). There are only 2 insurance companies that will insure him to cover pre-existing conditions and for each trip costs in excess of £1200. At any time, my husband may need further treatment so it is a big risk. Val

| The short answer is no. The long one is ..... I would prefer to be able to book early to get exactly what I wanted -cabin, dining time etc however some periods of leave (the popular times) are not allocated until a month or so before the time. So if I want to book a cruise in February that's fine I can do that when the brochure comes out but for anything near Easter, Christmas, October break or the main summer months I have to wait. Because of this in the main holidays we have sometimes been lucky and picked up a great bargain last minute and other times we can't get the cabin we want or the cruise at all which is even more disappointing. Consequently we tend to stick to the unpopular months for some breaks if there is somewhere particular we want to go -that way we can generally get what we want and take a few last minute chances here and there for the rest. It would not work for the cruise companies if we all booked early or all booked late so there has to be a balance. Also the prices sometimes go up so the early bookers have already got a great rate/ upgrade against the new price. We are booked on a cruise for next September which was booked on pre-release. Booking the same cruise today would be considerably more expensive and its academic anyway, as all of the suites and concierge class are sold out so there is nothing even near it to book. Here is a thought, how much is getting the dining seating you want worth to you. Early bookers are almost guaranteed their choice. Personally I have come to dislike early diner and it would put a bit of a damper on a holiday if I had to eat at 6.30 every night. What is the price of what you want, worth more than an upgrade which is usually just the same cabin one or two decks up?

| Val As I said i did not know your circumstances, but thanks for your post, I now fully understand why you would not wish to book, before being covered, glad also that your husband is now clear. All the best.
