Hi! Can anyone with fly/cruise experience help me with some information. My daughter and her boyfriend are flying to Barbados tomorrow for cruise N926 and are having trouble meeting the weight limit on their luggage, (how do they expect a young woman to holiday for two weeks on 23kg of luggage?!) I have always cruised from Southampton and threfore have no idea of how strict the airline is on luggage allowances and what the cost of additional baggage is likely to be. We have contacted P&O, who surprisingly could not give us a definitive answer and the carrier, Thomas Cook, who were even more unhelpful.

Some airlines are more flexible than others on this. P&O can't give you an answer because if they did and your daughter had problems at the airport, it would reflect badly on them - the bottom line is that the airline is in charge.

I've done six fly cruises with family and friends and none of us have had any trouble keeping to 23KG. It's perfectly do-able with a bit of thought. I wear a different outfit every night and every day, and still come home with things I haven't worn. I can even manage that within 23KG!!

I do hope your daughter and her boyfriend have a wonderful cruise (is there any room in the boyfriend's case?).

Hi Ken

Don't forget they have 7kg each hand luggage aswell.  Like Ann I take a different outfit and shoes for every night as does Brian (not as many shoes, I have to admit) and we have always managed to stay within the weight limit.  Last March from East Midlands to Barbados with Thomas Cook my brothers cases were overweight, they just put stickers on and didn't charge them anything.

I dont know what they are like with cruises,  but we flew to Florida with TC in June, and they were red hot with the luggage allowances.  Loads of people paying excess.  We went premium economy and had a larger allowance....Still only slightly under my 30kg weight limit coming home, couldn't resist a superkingsize quilt cover bargain in Walmart. LOL

On a fly/cruise myself in March and the 23kg limit for main hold luggage is challenging but as someone else says doable. (I have already done a pre flight check of my luggage weight!!!!) If I could pose a related question, how keen are the airline on size of hand luggage? Again weight is not a problem but my bag I hope to take is 1 (one) cm too wide

Its P&O that dictate the luggage weight and dimensions allowance and you may find this is a little different from the individual airlines. This is what the website says.

We have recently been advised that from 23 October 2008, the luggage allowances for all Charter flights will be reduced to 23 Kilos per person hold luggage. This change was brought about by the governments Health & Safety Officers, to ensure that baggage handlers in the UK do not have to lift any item exceeding 23kgs. However, the hand luggage allowance will remain at 5kgs per person with a size guideline of 43 cm x 28 cm x 23 cm.

As far as I know, there is no extra allowance for Premium. You should be aware also that the tax on premium seats is now £100 per person compared to £50pp in economy on flights to Barbados. Next November it will be £75 and £150

Its no good.  It doesn't matter how many times I measure the bag I had hoped to take.  Its still 30cm x 29cm x 13cm!!!
