Heather, the 1st night will be 'worrying' but after you've enjoyed it the next nights will be something to look forward to.

..... "you could dress smart caj and simply opt for an alternate dining venue"

David63

No need at all for another debate but it does happen and it is acceptable to P&O.

I recently asked if the alternative dining venues were open on formal nights and I believe that the response was that they were and that formal dress codes were not strictly enforced.

Maybe 'Informal' would be a better choice ?

For the benefit of the OP I am happy to be corrected on this point of course, perhaps they could check with P&O.

this very question on another thread and the advise offered was that it is entirely possible and that P&O accept that not all cruisers wish, or will be able to, dress formally.

Better on Ventura than say Oriana perhaps.

MoB.

You are correct.

The dress code stated on P231 of the 2010 brochure states that it is applicable to ALL Ships as the caveat, is, of course Oceana, as this is omitted from the list of ships for Semi Formal evenings as they have done away with this I believe. Not cruised on Oceana for a while but have clocked up almost 4 months on Aurora in the last 21 months alone.

Apart from the main restaurants, and certain bars, the minimum required is smart casual.

E.G. Aurora- Formal evenings, require formal attire for admission to the Crows Nest and Andersons.

Alternative dining venues and the self service restaurant, others bars and the theatre, smart casual as minimum.

Although we always adhere to the dress code of the evening, from personal choice, I do not wish to see new cruisers being given, albeit well intentioned advice, that is slightly incorrect.

Isn't this ''the dress code does not apply to the self serve'' a bit hit & miss, they don't actually state this anywhere do they? if so I have not seen it. I have seen it quoted elsewhere, even an email once, but as I understand it the dress code is everywhere. I don't mind if the self serve is a different code but if so they should say so.

I have seen people in t shirts and jeans being turned away from a restaurant when it was a formal evening.

Just don't worry about it. It is not worth spoiling your holiday worrying. I dislike formal evenings intensley but go along with it but certainly don't wear glamorous dresses. A lot of fuss for a couple of hours. My husband wears a dinner suit which was bought cheaply.

I am sure that when you are actually there and see the range of clothing people wear you will feel a lot better.

You are on a cruise to enjoy a relaxing holiday not to feel tense about dress codes. You will have a fab time and will wonder why you worried about what amounts to a tiny part of the cruise.

the dress code is only for public rooms. Self service is not included.

David I don't think that is right, I think they maybe don't uphold the rule that's all.

This is what is says, I would advise better safe than embarrassed...''Please do not wear your swimsuit in the lounges, interior bars, restaurants or reception area. A shirt and suitable footwear is required while indoors and when using the buffets. In the evenings all restaurants and bars comply with the dress code of the evening.''
