Strangely enough, submarines are always known as boats.  Submariners don't usually refer to ships as ships, they refer to them as targets!

You can fit a ship in a bottle but you can not fit a ship in a boat unless it is in a bottle in which case the boat would not fit on the ship.

When cruising , we sail on cruise SHIPS not cruise BOATS....

So why some say boat when talking about their cruises is a mystery...

  P&O's Commodore --said a good few years ago to someone in my company ---------A boat is the thing they take you off on if the ship sinks ---------Guess he was fed up with people  calling his Ship a boat !! But it always Jogged my memory .

We always say 'you hang boats over the side of ships'. I confess, we wince, when speaking with fellow passengers who will insist on talking about the boat - I mean, whoever heard of a 'cruise boat'? Where have they been all their lives? The TV show The Love Boat just confuses the issue!
