| Consider ... There are too many serious threads being spoilt and too many posters are getting irritated by it. It should no longer be tolerated ......... It is blindingly obvious that this site is a vibrant place, is filled with an interesting mix of characters and should not be tampered with - albeit with the one major exception, in my opinion. What can we do ......... Let us accept the 'debating point ' that anything goes (bar t&c violations) in the General Chat & Discussion Forum Conceding that this is the way forward then be aware that by implication it must become totally unacceptable to hijack ANY other Thread in ANY other Forum. Violations should lead to warnings and subsequent banning orders - NO exceptions. The OP to 'report' his / her own opening posting to draw Admins attention to the hijacking, in this way the OP takes control of the Topic and Admin retain control of the site. It may be appropriate for the OP to post a 'warning' as a preventative measure. If you do not vote then you are condoning the present situation ..... So ... the poll For simplicity it comes down to two convenient choices. 1. You believe that the OP has the right to expect their Topic to be treated with respect. 2. You do not believe that the OP has the right to expect their Topic to be treated with respect. There cannot be a third way. Please use your vote ........ NOW .

MoB....I agree with you on this.....Don't know what can be done about it though other than asking people not to do it....They must realise they are going off topic....Having said that, it sometimes happens quite innocently...You know the way any conversation might go and I expect I'm guilty somewhere along the line...I suppose there is something we can do about it and that is...If we read a thread that's going off subject then don't get involved, post something that brings it back to the original subject...

| I have been an admin for a site where it is important that the threads are on topic and anything off-topic is ruthlessly deleted from the post or the post as a whole is deleted. It makes sense for that site as its purpose is the provision of historically accurate and verified material. It requires a great deal of effort on the part of the administrators, and everyone who submits messages that site knows the rules and that they are not making 'posts' so much as suggested comments that may or may not end up in the definitive articles. Every other site I use is essentially a set of loose conversations, as people respond to the original post, then respond to that post and so on, and who knows where things up. It makes no more sense, really, for the original poster to control where things go than it does in day to day chatter.

MoB, I can't reaslly vote as I believe threads should be kept ON topic on the help sections etc but on the general chat and discussion section, I believe anything goes. As it does IRL!

| I feel the general chat and discussion area of the forum should mirror real life. If we were down the pub we could start on one topic but it would meander through several areas and very unlikely to stay on the original topic. It is also unlikely that someone would formally request that a new topic be started. So I think leave it as it is, it is fine. On the other areas of the forum, I feel strongly that they should stay on the original topic or be very closely related. If you want to start a conversation about a new topic, start a new thread. These are much more like FAQ sections and people need to be able to find what they are searching for, especially newbies. I think the key here is rules. Let's assume the above was the rules. Then people would not get upset (hopefully) as they know they are the rules. If they don't like the rules, then they do not have to post. Anyway, just my view!

One of the flaws in the argument is that the OP's perception of a topic going "off topic" may not be the same as other poster's perceptions. As has been stated several times in various topics any member can develop a topic in any way they see fit and this development can, at times, appear to go off topic.
Without active moderation there is no solution to this problem and the OP, as any other poster, already has the ability to report a topic/post - it is up to the Administrator what happens.
