Abu Dhabi is the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates and on first glance appears to be a striking modern wonder. However look past the futuristic skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and endless shopping malls and you'll see that the cultures of an older society still remain.

Before Abu Dhabi struck (black) gold with its rich oil reserves, it was at the centre of the pearl industry - you can see the traditional dhows used for both pearl diving and fishing along the harbour. The Heritage Village living museum offers a more in depth look at ancient cultures, while for an insight into today's way of life, head to Khalifa Park, a popular recreation landmark for residents and visitors.

Abu Dhabi City Tour

Discover the magic of this incredible city including the Grand Mosque, local culture and heritage and some amazing photo opportunities.

Visit the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an opulent tribute to HH the late Sheikh Zayed, former ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of UAE whose dream has been fittingly brought alive by his son, the current President, Sheikh Khalifa.

The next stop is Zayed Centre, a museum for Presidential memorabilia featuring the late Sheikh Zayed’s favourite cars, rifles and gifts received from royalty from all over the world. Continue the drive past the 6-star Emirates Palace Hotel for a photo-stop at the Breakwater which offers breathtaking views of Abu Dhabi’s skyline, often referred to as the ‘Manhattan of the Middle East’.

A short walk from here brings you to the Heritage Village, where the culture and traditions of the Emirate are reflected in recreated village scenes that provide a glimpse into the simple life and times before the discovery of oil. From here a drive along the glittering tower lined Corniche brings you back to the pier.

Clothing must not be white, animal print, tight fitting or transparent. Clothing must be loose fitting with long sleeves that cover the wrists. Clothing must cover legs to the ankles and ladies must take a head scarf to cover their head. Shoes will be required to be removed before entering the Mosque. There is approximately 1 hour of intermittent walking on this tour over mostly flat and paved surfaces, but there are several steps at the Zayed Centre.

Abu Dhabi RIB Ride Experience

Head to the Emirate Palace Marina and step aboard a RIB for a thrilling ride around the Corniche Bay!

Admire Abu Dhabi city as you drive to the Emirate Palace Marina, passing the palm tree-lined Corniche promenade along the way. Upon arrival, you’ll board your RIB power boat and whizz off around the bay, taking in the city skyline views and coastline sights. Your RIB ride will cruise by the Cultural Heritage Village Site and take you the full length of the Corniche Bay. Pause at the timeless Fisherman’s Village, and then head a little further out into the open water, where you’ll pass around the man-made Lulu Island. After an exhilarating ride, you’ll head back to the Emirates Palace Marina, for the return drive to the port.

Essential information

It is a customs requirement for all participants to carry a copy of their passports. Those who fail to do so will not be permitted on the tour. Pregnant women and children may not participate. This tour is not suitable for those with back or neck injuries or conditions that may be affected by a fast RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) ride. Lifejackets must be worn. This tour is dependent on favourable sea conditions, and may be cancelled at short notice. Passengers may be requested to their remove shoes once on board the RIB. The RIB ride will last around 50 minutes.

Enjoy a great day out taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful Garden City of Al Ain.

Visit the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi to discover the world’s 3rd largest Mosque and gain an insight into the culture and religion of the people of Abu Dhabi.

Continue through fascinating desert scenery to reach the Hajar Mountains, where you will visit the Al Ain Museum. Discover the fine collection of historical objects ranging from the past (Archaeology) to more recent history (Ethnography).

Walk into the nearby Al Ain Oasis to learn about the ancient Falaj (irrigation system) that was developed by the Persians more than 3,000 years ago, before visiting the renovated Old Palace of His Highness the late Sheikh Zayed, former President of UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

Explore the Camel Market, the largest in the country, before enjoying a sumptuous buffet lunch at a city hotel.

Al Maya Island Resort

Al Maya Island Resort is the perfect getaway, with its white sandy beach and turquoise water.

From the port, you’ll take a coach ride to the jetty to join the Al Maya Island shuttle boat. As you head across the water, you’ll be taken away from the hustle and bustle of the city for some pure escapism.

During your stay, you’ll have access to the resort; towels, sunbeds and a shared umbrella are included. There will be around 5 hours for you to spend as you please. Relax in the sun, enjoy the beach or take a dip in the pool. Lunch and refreshments are not included, but can be purchased at the resort’s restaurant.
At the designated meeting time and point, you’ll re-join the shuttle boat back to Abu Dhabi.

This excursion will operate by coach, boat and on foot. Children under 3 may not participate. The resort and shuttle boat are not exclusive to P&O Cruises and can be busy at peak times. There is varying terrain, which includes some uneven ground and gravel. A degree of agility is required when boarding the boat. For those who suffer with seasickness please take the necessary medication. Please remember swimwear and sun protection and local currency for purchases. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages prior to any swimming activities.

Arabian Nights Resort Experience - Double

A wonderful opportunity to experience an overnight stay at the Arabian Nights Village Resort nestled in the heart of the desert.

DAY 1 Setting off from the port in a 4 wheel drive vehicle, your driver/guide will take you along the highway towards Abu Dhabi’s golden expanse of desert. Upon arrival, your experience begins with an exhilarating ride across the dunes, referred to locally as ‘dune bashing’. Enjoy a few photo opportunities along the way, including a stop to view the desert camels, and admire the sweeping panoramic views.

Your drive will come to an end at the Arabian Nights Village Resort. Set in the midst of the desert, the resort is designed to recreate a traditional Emirati village, combined with a touch of modern living. Once you are all checked in there will be time for you to freshen up before enjoying the on-site activities, which include henna painting, camel rides and sand surfing. For those who prefer, you may wish to relax and spend an hour around the pool and freshen up afterwards, prior to the evening’s buffet dinner.

Afterwards, it’s time to enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and delight in the evening’s entertainment. Seated in traditional Arabic style seating, let yourself absorb the evening ambience as you listen to the sounds of an oud player and watch some belly dancing. As the evening draws to an end, you can retire to your room at your own leisure.

DAY 2 Following a buffet breakfast, you’ll check out and head back across the desert by 4 wheel drive to the highway. Here, your mode of transport will switch to a bus for the return drive to the port.

Due to the location of Arabian Nights, there is no Wi-Fi or mobile phone signal and the rooms are not equipped with televisions. The hotel is equipped with an internal means of communication in the unlikely event of an emergency. Passengers are advised to exercise caution at night when returning to their rooms or exploring, as the resort has limited lighting and it can be particularly dark. It is recommended you take a torch. Please note that the Arabian Nights Resort Village is not exclusive to P&O Cruises. The 4 wheel drive, activities, evening buffet and entertainment will be shared with other day visitors and resort guests. Pregnant women and children may not participate on this tour. The drive over the dunes is bumpy in places and seatbelts must be worn at all times. Those with injuries or conditions which may be affected by the bumpy ride should not participate. Passengers taking part in the camel riding or sand surfing must be in good physical condition as these require physical exertion. You may be required to sign a waiver. It is advisable to pack lightly. Please ensure you take any medication you may require and a credit card or US Dollars for any additional purchases. Valuables that are not necessary to carry with you should be left on board the ship. Flat, comfortable closed toe walking shoes should be worn. Clothing should be light and casual and in accordance with the local culture. It is recommended that shoulders and knees are covered for the ladies and long trousers for the gentleman. Due to the variation in temperatures it is advisable to take a light jumper as the desert can become cooler at night. Please remember to take swimwear, a towel, sunglasses and sunscreen. The fare includes: transportation by bus, a driver/guide only, sightseeing, meals and accommodation, as described. For evening dinner, coffee or tea is included; those wishing to order alternative beverages will be charged separately. Each room is equipped with coffee and tea making facilities.
