Watching the Atlantic surf crash down on the rugged east coast of this richly diverse island and, for a moment, you may feel you could be on the Cornish coast but the moment you hear the waves of gospel singing emanating from a tiny local church you realise you could not be anywhere else but Barbados.

While, over on the sheltered west coast, the glorious beaches are pure Caribbean. And there are more beaches and a lot more bars, cafés, restaurants and clubs creating a vibrant 24/7 lifestyle on the south coast, too.

In the capital and cruise port, Bridgetown, there are intriguing signs of its British colonial past while, across the island, you are really spoilt for choice.  You can enjoy every watersport under the sun; stunning nature walks and bike rides; or maybe a trip to the uniquely magnificent Harrisons Cave underground complex of caverns, waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites.

A Walk around Bridgetown

Join a local guide on a walk around Bridgetown, the perfect way to experience this bustling capital.

By taking a guided walking tour you’ll discover things that will bring Bridgetown’s past to life.

Setting off from the port, your local guide will take you on a leisurely walk into the heart of Bridgetown. You’ll get a feel for local life and have the opportunity to view some of the buildings that have played a part in Bridgetown’s heritage.

You’ll see the slave hut, the first point of entry for all African slaves entering the Americas and the most important stop in the Triangular Trade. A stop will also be made at Jubilee Gardens, which were created in 1888 in honour of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. You’ll pass by the Colonnade building, built in 1898 with cast iron decoration it became the tranship hub of Bridgetown and today it’s a modern shopping centre. Admire the ballast brick Spirit Bond building, which was once used as storage for rum and the former lending institution, the Mutual Centre Building.

Complete your tour with a visit to the National Heroes Square, formerly Trafalgar Square and home to Lord Nelson’s Statue which predates the London Column by twenty seven years.

During your tour, a soft drink refreshment will be offered.

Essential information

This excursion will operate on foot. Order of visits may vary. This tour involves around 1½ hours of leisurely walking over relatively flat, paved walkways which includes some cobblestones and uneven areas in parts. It is advisable to wear a hat and take sunscreen and a bottle of water. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are essential.

The Atlantis Submarine Experience

Enjoy the magic of the underwater world of Barbados on board the incredible Atlantis Submarine.

Cruise through an amazing undersea world at depths of 50 to 150 feet as you embark on a voyage of discovery aboard the Atlantis Submarine. Atlantis is one of the premier attractions in the Caribbean, providing a unique exposure to a fascinating underwater world.

You’ll board a ferry for the short transfer out to the dive site to join the Atlantis Submarine. This ‘aquarium in reverse’ will provide you with a view of a world with marine life in its natural environment. The colour and abundance of exotic fish, spectacular sponge gardens and fascinating coral formations will be unveiled outside your porthole.

All this time Atlantis is maintained at a cool air conditioned temperature and sea level pressure. Experienced crew will point out and describe the sights in detail as tropical fish pass within touching distance beyond the portholes.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by bus, boat and submarine. Children under 4 are not permitted to participate and all participating children must be at least 3 feet tall. This tour involves very little walking, however passengers must be able to negotiate an 11 step ladder into and out of the Atlantis Submarine. The Submarine dive lasts approximately 50 minutes. The views underwater are subject to local sea conditions on the day.

Barbados Beach Break

Take some time out to relax on one of the island’s beaches.

Enjoy a scenic transfer through the historic capital of Bridgetown, passing the parliament buildings and Independence Square and on to Carlisle Bay, one of the longest and widest beaches on the island.

Upon arrival, you’ll be offered a refreshing drink and have a brief orientation of the beach and facilities. It’s then time for you to sit back and relax on your complimentary beach chair and enjoy the sun, sea and sand.

After your stay, you’ll meet at the agreed time for the return drive to the ship.

This excursion will operate by minibus and on foot. Passengers are reminded to wear swimwear, take a towel and sunscreen. Umbrellas are complimentary; however they are subject to availability and will be shared. Shower and changing rooms are available. US Dollars and local currency are accepted for purchases. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages prior to any swimming activities. There may be independent suppliers on the beach that offer watersports. These are provided by parties unconnected to P&O Cruises.

Learn the spirited history of rum production in Barbados with visits to 2 of its leading distilleries, enjoying samples as you go!

Barbados is considered by some to be the birthplace of rum, with the earliest reference to a distillery here dating back to 1631.

A short drive from the port will take you to the Mount Gay Visitor Centre. Sold in 110 countries with company deeds from 1703, Mount Gay is the oldest existing brand of rum in the world. View a state-of-the-art multimedia presentation and enjoy a tour around the distillery with your knowledgeable guide. Learn how rum is aged, blended and bottled, and visit an authentic Bajan chattel house to sample Mount Gay rums. Bottles of the famous liquor are also available to buy.

Afterwards, a drive through Bridgetown takes you out into the beautiful Bajan countryside as you travel to the Foursquare Rum Distillery and Heritage Park. Founded on the site of a former sugar factory, Foursquare is now home to the most modern rum distillery in the western hemisphere, developed with innovation and green technology in mind. Learn how carbon dioxide produced in the distillation process is captured and sold to local gas bottlers while the rum making process itself stays true to its 350 year old island heritage. Foursquare’s line of fine boutique rums are sought after among enthusiasts and you will again have the chance to sample some of their finely crafted product.

This excursion will operate by bus and on foot. This tour involves around 1-1½ hours of walking over relatively flat terrain. There are around 20 steps to negotiate at the Mount Gay Visitors Centre. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. Participants must be 21 years of age and over to sample the rum.

Barbados In Focus Photography Tour

Join top Bajan photographer, Ronnie Carrington, on a journey through quaint areas of Barbados, perfect for photographing.

Head across the island to the spectacular Scotland District, an area of undulating landscapes overlooking the very scenic east coast. Your route passes acres of waving sugar cane and takes you through quaint rural villages with brightly painted rum shops and chattel houses. The beautiful rugged landscape, intriguing architecture and good-natured country folk, combine to make this a unique experience.

Enjoy the sights of Bathsheba, on the east coast, the most photographed area on the island. Watch the Atlantic breakers pound relentlessly against giant coral boulders and create whirlpools of foaming surf. A photographer’s delight.
