Jungle Nature Trek

An ideal tour for nature lovers, trekkers and those who want to experience the real ‘jungle’.

Sit back and relax on a scenic drive, passing through small villages as you head towards the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, one of Indonesia’s most important conservation areas. The reserve is located about 20 kilometres northwest of Bitung and is situated amongst rolling hills and valleys.

Upon your arrival at the reserve, you will be greeted by local forest rangers before embarking on your guided trek, in search of a variety of wildlife that can be observed roaming free in the jungle. Have your camera at the ready as you can often see the Black Crested Macaque (the black tailless monkeys) and the Tarsius Tarsier (the world’s smallest primate) as well as Maleo birds, wild pigs and kuskus (large-eyed marsupials).

At the end of your trek, you will reach a black sandy beach, where you will have some free time to relax on the beach or take a refreshing swim.

Enjoy an Indonesian snack box and soft drink refreshment, before re-boarding the bus for the leisurely drive back to your ship.

Essential information

This tour will operate by bus and on foot and involves approximately 3 hours of walking over uneven ground. The drive to the reserve is approximately 1½ hours. Passengers should wear swimwear under their clothes; take a towel, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Minahasa Highlands Experience

A full day tour exploring the Minahasa volcanic highland area.

The Minahasan region covers an area of approximately 418,862 hectares. The word Minahasa means unification of the traditional tribes and was derived from the word ‘esa’ or ‘one'.

Tomohon is an important town in North Sulawesi and was a part of the Minahesa Regency. It lies between 2 volcanoes, Mount Mahawu and Mount Lokon. Visit the traditional local market, where you can find an abundance of colourful flowers, fruits, vegetables and spices.

Lake Linow is a sulphur lake with a rich thermal activity of fumaroles, sulphur steam, sulphur muds and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The lake is fed by a steaming volcanic spring and is famed for its colour changes from deep blue to turquoise, green and sulphur yellow. During your visit, refreshments of coffee, tea and a local snack will be served at the café adjacent to the lake.

A short drive from Lake Linow is the Woloan village, famous for making traditional ‘Knock Down Houses’ that can be transported and reassembled anywhere in the world. The houses are made from local hardwood, and traditional methods are used that allow them to be easily disassembled and moved.

An Indonesian buffet lunch will be served at a local resort, before the return drive to your ship.

Essential information

There is approximately 1½ hours of walking on this tour over gravel, paved and uneven surfaces. The drive to Tomohon is approximately 1½ hours. Passengers are advised to take a hat and wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

The City of Monado

Discover the culture and history of the provincial capital of North Sulawesi on this city tour.

Monado is located in the Bay of Monado and is surrounded by a mountainous area. The name Monado comes from ‘manadou’ or ‘wanazou’ meaning ‘on the far coast’ or ‘in the distance. It originally referred to the further of the 2 islands, which can be seen from the mainland.

A traditional war dance of Minahasa will welcome you as you board your bus for your drive into the heart of Chinatown, in the city of Monado. Visit the Ban Hin Kiong Temple, one of the oldest Chinese temples built during the Qing Dynasty. This red temple is elegant and attractive and covered with ornaments on every side. Head towards the centrum or city centre point and visit an old church, built by a Dutch East Indies company in the 19th century.

Take in the scenic views as you enjoy a traditional Indonesian lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, you’ll have a shopping stop at Merciful Buildings to purchase souvenirs or buy traditional cookies and snacks.

En route back to your ship, a visit will be made to the Monument of Christ Blessing that was inaugurated in 2007 and is considered one of highest monuments in Asia and 4th tallest statue of Christ in the world.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There is approximately 1 hour of walking on this tour over mainly paved and gravel ground. The drive to Monado is approximately 1½ hours each way. Comfortable, light clothing is recommended and modest dress is required inside the temple.
