About Roatan

Roatan is one of the three beautiful Bay islands located off the north coast of Honduras. Set on a coral reef and beholding scenic reserves, botanical gardens and some of the finest beaches in Latin America and the Caribbean, the eco-tourism sector here is blossoming.

Within the islands lush tropical landscape you will find jungles, forests, mangrove canals and mountain peaks. Visit Carambola Botanical Reserve and the Roatan Butterfly Gardens or take a canopy tour to appreciate its natural charms. Off land scubadivers can enjoy calm turquoise waters filled with volcanic mazes, underwater caverns and colourful and exotic marine life.

Roatans quaint seaside villages and resorts are a great place to soak up some culture and shop for unusual and attractive Central American arts and crafts.

Big French Key Beach Break

Experience a few hours relaxing in the sun on the island of Big French Key.

Embark on a scenic coach ride to French Cays dock, where you’ll board a boat for the short transfer across to Big French Key.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing welcome drink and some light snacks, then the time is yours to spend as you wish. Sit back, relax and soak up the sun on the white sandy beach or take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

You may also choose to sample some island cuisine at the island’s small snack bar.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by bus, boat and on foot. The journey to Big French Key is non-guided and takes approximately 35 minutes each way; 30 minutes by coach and a further 5 minutes by boat. Big French Key is located next to the island of Little French Key, and therefore noise may be heard from this neighbouring island. Beach chairs are available, as well as a limited amount of umbrellas. Passengers are reminded to wear swimwear and sunscreen and to bring a towel. Water shoes are recommended. Showers are available. Big French Key is not exclusive to P&O Cruises and may become busy. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages prior to swimming. There may be independent suppliers on the beach that offer water sports, these are provided by parties unconnected to P&O Cruises.

East Island Highlights

An opportunity to discover the east side of the island, which offers a more rural experience.

Enjoy lovely views of the island as you take a scenic drive to the Iguana Hideaway, owned by a local family who wish to conserve and protect the species. Here you will walk amongst the giant Iguana’s as they roam freely, some of which are 3 feet long.

Afterwards, your scenic drive will continue, passing through the small local villages and on to a panoramic viewpoint. Enjoy a short photo stop and perhaps purchase a souvenir from one of the open-air kiosks.

The Perla Ethnic Point at Punta Gorda is your next stop, where you’ll watch the Garifuna Dancers performing to the sound of their drums. You’ll also learn some of the history of the Garifuna and where the community live.

On the return drive, a short photo stop will be made at a viewpoint where you can enjoy distant views of a stilt fishing village, once inhabited by pirates and now the home of a family-owned fishing company, the 2nd major industry of the island.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by bus and on foot. This tour involves limited walking; however passengers must be able to negotiate steps on to and off the bus. There are also around 17 steps to negotiate at the Yubu Experience. Flat, comfortable closed-toe shoes are advised. US Dollars are accepted for purchases.

Little French Key Beach Escape

Experience a few hours of paradise at the private island of Little French Key.

Embark on a scenic coach ride to French Cays dock, where you’ll board a boat for the short transfer across to the most exclusive and private beach on Roatan; Little French Key.

Located in a secluded, calm blue lagoon with a beautiful tropical setting and surrounded by palm trees and mangroves, you won’t be the first person to mistake it for paradise!

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing welcome drink and some light snacks, then the time is yours to spend as you wish, enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this blissful island.

Sit back, relax and soak up the sun on the white sandy beach, take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea or perhaps visit the small zoo, which is home to a private collection of exotic animals, most of which have been rescued.

You may also choose to sample some island cuisine at one of the island’s small snack bars.

Sea and See

A chance to discover the underwater world of Honduras, combined with local life and a visit to the Cameo Factory.

A short drive takes you to a beautiful bay where you will board a semi-sub. This boat does not submerge; instead you’ll descend a few steps into the hull of the boat, which forms an underwater observatory so you can view the treasures of the deep. While you are seated in air-conditioned comfort, your guide will explain the magical blue environment. Pass by beautiful coral formations, living reef, and colourful tropical fish without even getting wet!

After your tour of the sea, you’ll head to the quaint village of West End. Enjoy a refreshing drink and watch the Garifuna Dancers perform the ‘Punta’. You’ll also have chance to browse the small shops for souvenirs.

Take a trip to the only Cameo Factory in the Americas. During this short shopping stop, admire many cameo pieces, hand-made bracelets, rings and necklaces.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by bus and semi-sub. It involves limited walking, however passengers must be able to negotiate steps on board the boat, at the West End bar and onto and off of the minibus. Walking during shopping time in West End is optional. Please note that this tour may operate in reverse order with the stop at the Cameo Factory taking place first, en-route to the semi-sub. Sightings are dependent on local sea conditions.

Combine some of the main highlights of Roatan with a boat cruise and time at the beach.

Begin your tour with a photo stop at a viewpoint offering a wonderful panoramic view of the coastline and surrounding hills. Afterwards you’ll visit one of the island’s most beloved attractions; the Iguana Hideaway, to see the giant iguanas moving freely around you, some of which are more than 3 feet long. You’ll also have the opportunity to view the Reserve’s small ocean enclosure with its resident tarpons.

Continue to Dixon Cove, Las Palmas where you’ll board an island-style boat for a 20 minute cruise through the historic waterways. Sit back and relax as you travel along the mangrove-lined waterways and past 2 of the biggest semi-submerged shipwrecks on the island.

Disembark your boat back in Las Palmas where you’ll be treated to a musical show performed by the Garifunas; direct descendants of the islands Carib Indians who settled here in 1797. During the performance, they’ll share with you some of their most important dances. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Outdoor Museum, to see reproductions of the Garifunas huts and sample freshly prepared yuka bread. A soft drink refreshment will also be served.

Round off your tour at Las Palmas Beach, where you’ll have around 1 hour of free time to spend relaxing in the sun, enjoying a swim in the sea or browsing the local souvenir stores.
