About Rome

Standing in the Colosseum, visiting Vatican City and tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain are all unique experiences of a lifetime to be had in the Eternal City of Rome, reached from your Italian cruise port Civitavecchia.

Rome's breathtaking monuments, palaces, churches and classical features are quite unlike anything you will find in any other European city. They will always leave you wanting to come back for more - hence the coin-tossing, which is said to guarantee your return.

The city's other must-sees include the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon (probably the most complete ancient Roman building in the city) and the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo's masterpieces.

While steeped in history, Rome is also a modern, bustling city with designer shops and chic boutiques at every turn. Reasonably priced department stores selling all the latest fashions can be found in the many pedestrianised shopping streets, while restaurants and cafés spill out onto piazzas offering authentic Italian dishes and sensational ice cream.

Take in the highlights of Civitavecchia’s historical town on this interesting snapshot tour and music recital.

Civitavecchia meaning ‘old city’ is one of the largest ports in Italy and is just 70km from Rome. Here, there are remains of the Port of Traiano and the city of Centumcellae that was conquered by the Saracens in the year 828 and transformed into a military base.

After a short transfer by shuttle bus, you’ll arrive at the famous Michelangelo's Fortress, where your walking tour will begin. After a short walk, you’ll cross the arch to Piazza Leandra, right in the historical centre, where you find the Church of the Star, famous because this religious building is the starting point of all the processions and religious rites of Civitavecchia.

Your last stop will be at the Cittadella of the Music where you’ll enjoy a 30 minute concert consisting of typical Italian music, including some pieces from famous operas, the Italian Belcanto and Roman and Neapolitan songs.

Return to the ship by shuttle bus or remain in the city centre to explore independently.
