Stromboli

The smoking volcanic island of Stromboli is part of the beautiful Aeolian Archipelago. It lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea just north of Sicily. This forbidding, conical mountain rises suddenly out of the azure waters and boasts a trickling lava trail that is visible as you sail by.

According to the US Geological Survey, Stromboli is the most active volcano in the world. It erupts explosively two to three times an hour, spewing lava, rocks and ash in a tight cone, as high as 3,000 feet into the air. The show is quite dramatic and probably best seen at a distance, from the comfort of your cruise ship!
