Bremen – Medieval Town

Visit Bremen’s old town to see its magnificent Cathedral and Town Hall.

Discover Bremen’s rich heritage in the old town. Bremen joined the Hanseatic League in 1358 and most of its wealth was through the coffee and wool trade. During a walking tour of the area you’ll see numerous historic buildings, streets and squares which all echo the Hanseatic past.

Highlights of your walk include one of the city’s landmarks, the Roland Statue, located in front of the impressive Town Hall. Statues abound in Bremen and you’ll also see the one of the Bremen City Musicians – a donkey, dog, cat and cockerel, who according to the Grimm fairytale, trekked to Bremen. The magnificent Cathedral has a vast twin-towered façade dating from the 11th century and your guide will show you the Weeding House, probably the world’s smallest hotel.

The main attraction of the old town is, however, the impressive Town Hall, and you will have the opportunity to visit the inside of this Gothic building with its Renaissance façade. Many of the riches, power, and glory of the city’s history are visible in the building’s interior.
