Snaefellsnes Peninsula

This fascinating and scenically rewarding tour will show you the ‘other side of Iceland’.

Snaefellsjokull Glacier is considered to be one of the world’s seven most potent energy sources; travel along the rugged coastline of the peninsula which hugs the lower regions of the famous glacier.

At Djúpalónssandur, take a refreshing walk to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. There are many beautiful and interesting rock formations to be discovered at this picturesque stop. Continue to Hellnar and the tiny fishing community of Arnarstapi, passing the volcanic plug of Lóndrangar.

At Arnarstapi, walk along a pathway boasting many interesting geological phenomena and rich bird-life, before re-boarding the coach to drive to Budir, famed for its dramatic, black lava surroundings and yellow sand beach.

Helgafell is the magical Holy Mountain, and those who follow some simple rules while climbing the 240 feet hillock are said to be entitled to have 3 wishes granted. Enjoy a short stop at Stykkishólmur, the largest town on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, before returning to Grundarfjordur.

A fish lunch, with a choice of tea or coffee, is included in the tour.

Western Snaefellsnes Peninsula

A half day tour to discover the magical beauty of the western area of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Take a trip along the peninsula towards the Snaefellsjokull glacier, made popular by Jules Verne’s classic novel ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. Whilst a visit to the glacier is not included in the tour, weather permitting, part of it can be seen.

Stop at Djúpalónssandur to explore a little of the beach - see the large boulders that were used to test the strength of fishermen. This pebbled cove once housed around 70 fishing stations. There are also many beautiful and interesting rock formations to be discovered at this picturesque stop.

Travel onwards to the tiny fishing community of Arnarstapi, Many stories and sagas are connected to this area, giving a mysterious appeal to these stunning surroundings. Enjoy a refreshing walk to see the interesting geological phenomena and rich bird-life. A scenic drive takes you to the final stop at Budir, which is famed not only for its dramatic, black lava surroundings but also for its yellow sand beach, quite a rarity in Iceland. You may be lucky enough to spot seals as they bask on the skerries out in the bay. Travel back to Grundarfjordur by way of the notorious Froðarheidi heath.

Boat Tour of Breidafjordur Bay

A treat for bird watchers and those who wish to admire the beauty of the region surrounding Breidafjordur.

A short drive from Grundarfjordur takes you to Stykkisholmur, where a unique sailing adventure awaits you. Join your boat for a tour of the southern islands of Breidafjordur exploring the strangely shaped cliffs and navigating the tidal currents of the Breidafjord ur Bay.

During the cruise, look out for a rich variety of bird life, including puffins, cormorants, shags, black guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and several gull species. Birds nesting and breeding in the rocks and cliffs can sometimes be observed from within a few yards. Occasionally seals can be spotted and you might even be lucky enough to spot the majestic white-tailed eagle soaring above.

Refreshments can be purchased on board the boat.

Local Life

Enjoy a pleasant walk with your local guide as you delve deeper into life in an Icelandic town.

Grundarfjörður is a growing community on the northern coast of Snaefellsnes peninsula. Fishing is the main industry here, with half of the town's working population employed in this sector. Your guide will address thought provoking topics such as religion, social issues, the Icelandic health system, alcohol regulations and social security as you see the sights of the beautiful town of Grundarfjörður. Become acquainted with the historical and cultural background of this welcoming community, and be prepared for some jaw dropping surprises, for even the Icelandic ancestry of James Bond is rumoured to somehow become woven into this entertaining yarn!

Start you tour from the harbour, and head to the Heritage Centre for an interesting 30 minute visit. See the playschool, health centre, church and other key sights of the town, whilst your guide shares their wealth of knowledge, and welcomes your questions and discussion. End your walk with an informal light quiz and fun award.
