Izapa Ruins and Tapachula City

Discover the fascinating history and culture of Puerto Chiapas.

Experience Mexico’s past and present as you explore the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Izapa, examine artefacts in the Regional Museum and then wander Tapachula’s town square on a sightseeing adventure.

Travel to Izapa, an archaeological site that, even though not completely explored, is one of the most important in the state of Chiapas, dating back to 1,500BC. From its beginnings as a small village around 1,500 BC, Izapa grew into the region’s most influential cultural and commercial centre, with a population of up to 10,000 people at the height of its influence.

From here, drive to the culturally diverse city of Tapachula, whose history and heritage has been influenced by many cultures. Visit the Archaeological Museum, where you’ll be able to inspect Mayan artefacts found in the region, many at Izapa. Your guide will then introduce you to some of the city’s highlights on a short walking tour around the town square. Enjoy some free time for shopping in local artisan shops or to explore the cafés and colourful streets.

Tree of Life and Chocolate Discovery - NEW

Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, and discover the importance of chocolate.

Dating from approximately 300BC to 100BC, the Tree of Life carvings were found at the Izapa ruins, and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs.

The Tree of Life is a common symbol in many cultures, and in the Mayan world it is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the 3 realms of the universe - the underworld, earth and the heavens.

Among the carvings is the Stella 5, depicting the Tree of Life as well as human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter.

Continue to Chocolate City, to learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. See how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate, and see a variety of local handicrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dancers and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances.
