Why is The Limelight Club a special place?

The Limelight Club is exclusively on board Britannia. It’s a unique experience with great food, live entertainment and a special atmosphere. You spend the whole evening here – from 6.30pm to 10pm. First there are drinks, then you enjoy a delicious three-course meal with entertainment from top-notch artists throughout the evening. You always feel the ‘wow factor’ here. The atmosphere, the interior décor, the food, the music, the artists… it’s like nowhere else. All the artists who perform here are amazing. Whether old favourites or new talent, they’re always special.

Do you have any favourite artists?

It’s so hard to choose as there are so many different genres of music and entertainment. I love working here as I get to see them all. One act that really impressed me was the Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli tribute. I loved them. They’ve performed in The Limelight Club only once and hopefully they will be coming back this year.

We’ve just finished the popular show Eric and Ern, the Morecambe and Wise tribute act, and we are now presenting Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri, who are amazing – it’s a full house every night for Kiki. After that, the talented Jaki Graham and singer Dean Andrews from Last Tango in Halifax and Ashes to Ashes will be at The Limelight Club. Dean is a lovely man. I’m looking forward to seeing him.

All the artists are great to work with, in fact. They always make us feel like they are one of us. We haven’t worked with any divas! They are all so lovely and down to earth with us and the guests.

How do you feel when you see guests having a great time?

I feel happy when they’re happy. I’m so proud when the show is finished and they say, ‘It’s top notch, it’s excellent, it’s so good’. I feel glad because I know we’re doing our job: everything is perfect in the restaurant, and the artists have done a great job. It’s important for me as we work so hard to make it a wonderful experience. This is my perfect job – I love to interact with the guests and to see our hard work create something special. It’s not my job, it’s my passion.

Do you see the same people coming back again and again?

Oh, yes. When I am checking the reservation, they say, ‘Oh, I’ve been here three times, four times already,’ or, ‘We came on our cruise last year so we’re coming back’. I always make sure these guests are well taken care of. It always makes me happy to welcome people back.

When people book well in advance, we allocate seating near the front. That is the policy: the more in advance you book, the nearer the stage you will be.

There is a lot to organise in terms of food, service and entertainment. It must be hard work.

I have a fantastic team of 10 here and we want everything to be perfect, down to the last detail. There is an amazing team spirit on Britannia generally. We all work so hard and know how to support each other. In The Limelight Club, there is a lot to think about and I am extremely organised! Of course, there’s the food and beverage team – we have four menu options at The Limelight Club so there’s always something interesting to try. Then there are the lighting and sound technicians, plus we work closely with Entertainment Manager Neil Oliver, who looks after the artists while they’re on board. Every night there are also special requests from the guests to take care of. Very often, the artists will be part of a special memory if one of the guests is celebrating a special occasion, from making an announcement to singing Happy Birthday. This is always lovely to see.

When you are not working, how do you relax?

I go to the gym and I love music, especially Ed Sheeran and Adele. I do like to sing, though I only do that in my cabin – never on stage here! My son, who is 13, is the musical one in the family. He plays the drums and would love to learn the guitar. He has asked me if he can get one as a present. I’m very excited that I’m going home soon after six months at sea. Perhaps now I can get him that guitar.
