Our Hotel Operations and Retail Manager shares his travel highlights and important advice for first-time guests

What does your job involve?

I head up a team of Hotel Operations and Retail managers, and it’s my job to make sure that we’re all providing the very best service to our guests. This might be simply responding to a problem quickly and efficiently, or looking at ways we can enhance guests’ overall experience while also maximising the retail and marketing opportunities on board.

 

What are the challenges of your job? And the rewards?

No two days are ever alike. It’s a fast-paced environment that requires you to think on your feet, and many of the decisions I make impact not only my team, but the guests, too. The reward is providing a memorable cruise holiday for all guests and then receiving their positive feedback.

 

How long have you worked for P&O Cruises?

I’ve worked for P&O Cruises since 2007. So far, my highlights have been visiting the magnificent ancient city of Petra in Jordan and Cape Town, South Africa. Petra is the capital of the Nabataean Arabs and one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. It marks the achievement of an impressive civilisation that perfectly carved the city into its mountains. Cape Town, meanwhile, is infused with vibrant culture and boasts an endless list of exciting things to do, from open-bar catamaran cruises to climbing Table Mountain, one of the new 7 Wonders of Nature.

 

Do you have a favourite P&O Cruises ship?

I enjoy working on all the vessels in our fleet, because for me each contract is about the people I work with and the guests I meet. I strive to exceed guest expectations and aim to treat each one as if they were a guest in my own home.

 

Which is your favourite cruise destination?

This is difficult, but I’d probably say the stunning walled city of Dubrovnik. The old town is gorgeous and, believe it or not, the pizza is in on par with what you find in Italy.

 

What are your three on board essentials?

Maple syrup (from Canada, not America), a laptop for movies, music and reading material, and, because I’m somewhat follicly challenged, a hat for sunny days.

 

Do you have any tips for first-time guests?

If you’re going ashore independently, please don’t be late back to the ship! It might result in you staying longer in port than you anticipated.

 

What makes you feel proud about your role?

To work for a leading British brand that has a rich heritage and strives to give guests the holiday of a lifetime every time.
