How long have you worked for P&O Cruises?
I’ve been at P&O Cruises for 8 months now and it’s flown by! Graduating in 2010 with a Geography degree from the University of Nottingham, I began my career in a graduate role in a market research consultancy in the Midlands. After that, I moved into media planning and buying at London agencies for a couple of years before successfully applying for my dream job here, and deciding to make the big move to Southampton to specialise in social media.

Did you always want to work in the travel industry?
I never really found my calling until I saw the advert for this job. Then it clicked in my mind – I love travelling, I love the sea (I’m a bit of a sailor) and my passion is social media marketing, so working for P&O Cruises fits perfectly!

 

What does your job involve on a typical day?
The first thing I do is check our social channels. I’ll be the one responding to that lovely picture you posted of the view from your cabin on your cruise. We put a lot of work into planning the content we post out on social, so I might then review some planned content and also chase up any ongoing enquiries I have regarding getting exciting content for our social channels. Unsurprisingly, it’s Christmas imagery I’m after at the moment, but livery updates are also on the horizon and we have plenty more surprises in store!

How important is social media for guests?
I feel that social media is one of the most important channels for both guests and P&O Cruises as a brand – it allows a two-way, quick communication. Also, not only does it allow us to get real-time feedback of our guests’ experiences, whether pre-cruise, on board or post-cruise, but it also allows us to communicate on a more personal level with them, which I hope enhances their experience with P&O Cruises. Our Facebook page has a great community feel, and I’m proud to be part of such a close-knit and special group of people who really do have such passion for P&O Cruises.

 

 

What are the key challenges of your job? And the rewards?
The breadth of my role is a challenge – social media is becoming more and more relevant to everything we do as a company, so I often have to reprioritise my workload. The rewards really are fantastic. I was lucky enough to sail on Britannia on her inaugural Round Britain cruise (which was also my first ever cruise) to cover her momentous journey on social media. It did involve a few 5am wake-up calls, but I thrived off capturing as much content as possible to try and bring the experience to life for our fans on social media. I also got to have a cooking lesson in The Cookery Club with my cooking heroes Mary Berry and James Martin, which is something I’ll never forget. Smaller, daily rewards for me are seeing our fans engage with the content we publish in a positive way – it often prompts people to reminisce about great experiences they’ve had on board, which makes it all worth it for me.

Do you go on board the ships often?
We try and hold our monthly team meetings on board the ships – it’s important for us at Head Office to stay in touch with the fleet as much as possible. I have also just booked my first cruise holiday for next year – a two-night Bruges cruise on Aurora where I’ll be taking my 95-year-old Granddad back to his home country of Guernsey. You’re never too old to cruise!

 

Do you have a favourite P&O Cruises ship?
My favourite ship has to be Britannia. She’s the first ship I sailed on, and I got to know her and the crew on board so well when I was on the Round Britain cruise. Her launch this year created such an electric buzz in the whole company, which has definitely rubbed off on me.

Have you worked on any exciting social campaigns this year?
The response to our Bake for Cakeboy campaign run with our Food Hero Eric Lanlard was brilliant, and it was so great to see our guests’ baking talents and the amount of guests who got involved. We have some exciting prizes to give away before Christmas, too, so keep your eyes peeled for news of these being announced.

 

What makes the brand so special to you?
The fact that P&O Cruises stays true to its British roots is a brand value I find particularly admirable in today’s world. Additionally, being a big foodie myself, I think it’s amazing we have such special relationships with our Food Heroes and their friends, which allows our guests to be taught by these world-famous, inspirational chefs on an almost one-to-one basis in The Cookery Club.
