Our Shore Excursion Manager helps guests make the most of the exotic destinations they visit

Shore Excursion Manager, Julia Stoica

My job has taken me to some of the most wonderful places on earth, but the real reward is making somebody's holiday extra special - Julia

How long have you worked for P&O Cruises?

I’ve been working and travelling all over the world with P&O Cruises for eight years. I used to work on the ships, but now I'm based onshore at the destinations.

What does your job involve?

As a Shore Excursion Manager, I work with local tour operators to choose the best activities for our guests. It’s up to me to bring the destinations to life, which can be a challenge when you’ve got less than a day to do it in. That’s why I only focus on the most authentic experiences. Luckily, all of the shore excursion executives who work with P&O Cruises are travel experts, so we’ve always got our finger on the pulse. You have to when you've got 80 different ports of call to cover across the world! I specialise in the Caribbean, UK, Channel Islands, USA and Canada, Malta, Gibraltar, India and Vietnam.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love being part of an industry that explores the world. Travel is my passion and I'm lucky to be in a job that allows me to head out to new destinations and experience the shore excursions for myself. My job has taken me to some of the most wonderful places on earth, but the real reward is knowing that I’ve made somebody else’s holiday extra special.

What are the main challenges of your job?

Working to the tight deadlines. It takes a lot of work to get a really, really good shore excursion programme up and running in time for a cruise.

What has been your favourite destination so far?

Every destination offers its own unique experience, so it’s hard to single out just one. But if I had to pick, it would be New York because it’s such a crazy and exciting place. I think everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime.

What’s your favourite thing to do on board?

I love the ship’s spas: there’s nothing better than indulging in a relaxing massage. After that, I'd get ready for a delicious, three-course dinner followed by a great show.

Describe the exciting things coming up at P&O Cruises.

Britannia has given us a fantastic opportunity to explore new ideas for our shore excursions. Already we’ve tested out a few in La Coruna, Kotor and St Lucia with the help of our Food Heroes, celebrity chefs Marco Pierre White and Atul Kochhar. In 2015, we’ve got plenty more lined up such as ‘Paella Secrets with James Martin'. It’s going to be a very exciting year.
