Introduced in England in 1840 by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, as a way to stop the hunger pangs during the long wait between breakfast and dinner – the two main meals at the time – the ritual of afternoon tea soon became an increasingly fashionable tradition among the upper classes of British society.

 

Today, nearly 200 years after the Duchess introduced the concept to the world, we’re thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of the traditional afternoon tea…

 

Tea with a twist

For a twist on the original afternoon tea, try Food Hero Eric Lanlard’s unique offering in The Epicurean restaurant on board Azura, Britannia and Ventura.

 

The Master Pâtissier and king of all things cake and dessert has devised an array of unique sweet and savoury creations to challenge the concept of traditional afternoon tea. Your taste buds will be spoilt for choice. Think smoked salmon in a lemon and black pepper macaroon, roast beef brioche buns, cheese éclairs, pop cake and cotton candy, dark chocolate cannelloni, orange infused almond cake with a hint of lavender, lemon scented scones and much more. Choose your favourite from a selection of fine teas to complement the flavour combinations. Or add a glass of fizz if you are celebrating a special occasion – or simply toasting your holiday.

 

Talking of his afternoon tea concept, Eric says: ‘This is a completely different experience to any afternoon tea you will have had at sea before. I’ve always been a big fan of afternoon tea and being quite a traditionalist it was important for me to keep the three key elements in place: savoury, sweet and scones. After that, it was all about making it fun, interactive and, of course, giving it a huge wow factor.’

 

Eric Lanlard’s Afternoon Tea at The Epicurean is available on selected sea days on board Azura, Britannia and Ventura. Bookings can be made through Cruise Personaliser.
