Family time is a precious thing, and getting the chance to holiday all together is something to celebrate. We know that when travelling as a family, pleasing everyone is important. Keeping the children entertained, having some adult time to enjoy the spa or wind down with a drink, as well as whole family activities, makes for the perfect family holiday.

Together time

The best bit of a family holiday is enjoying happy times and great experiences together, which is why we ensure that there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy on our family-friendly ships Aurora, Azura, Britannia, Oceana  and Ventura.

Get the competitive juices flowing with team sports such as table tennis, shuffle board, deck quoits, tennis, cricket and basketball. Or decide on the ultimate champion in the Family Olympics. Once the family sports champion is crowned, it’s time to enjoy some entertainment together. From movies, BBQs, quizzes and arts and crafts sessions to shows by guest entertainers, we’ve got it covered. End the night with a boogie at the disco – if Dad’s dancing isn’t too embarrassing – a game of bingo or a karaoke sing-along.

New for this year

From learning life skills to mastering science and the art of archery, we’re taking family fun to the next level with a range of exciting new programmes this year.

Commando Joe’s will be coming on board offering a range of 45-minute fun sessions suitable for the entire family. An elite team of military veterans, the Commando Joe’s team uses their extensive experience to help build character and confidence. It’s not about shouting orders and military manoeuvres. It’s about teaching strength of character, positivity under pressure, and resilience in the face of whatever life throws up.

For some explosive fun, The Ministry of Science is offering a range of educational and interactive shows and workshops for families. They believe there’s a scientist, engineer or inventor in everyone. Their live show is not your ordinary science show either – it comes with a bang. From hydrogen bottle rockets and the discovery of methane, to the invention of the battery… The Ministry of Science team combines the world of education with live experiments, inspiring and educating through the medium of live theatre.

Ever fancied yourself as a Robin Hood or a Game of Thrones warrior, bow and arrow in hand? Well, first step to that is learning the art of archery. Child, adult and family sessions are available where experts will teach you about the sport and how to achieve the perfect score. And with Rio 2016 fast approaching, now is the ideal time to perfect your archery skills – there could be an Olympian in everyone.

That’s only a snapshot of the new programmes we have on board to ensure families can spend as much time together in a fun and memorable way. With circus workshops and magic shows, balloon modelling lessons and music workshops, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Heading up the Youth Team

Of course, on holiday there may be days where the children want to hang out with people their own age, and parents want to unwind and relax next to the pool, book in hand. At The Reef children’s club (available on all our family-friendly ships), we offer a wide range of entertainment for every age group, day and night, under the care of highly qualified staff with enhanced DBS checks.

Our staff have extensive experience of planning and facilitating activities for two- to 17-year-olds and are trained teachers and early year practitioners. Trust our Reef Rangers to bring activities to life at one of four age-appropriate children’s facilities. The children will love the games, crafts, sports and fun play from morning to night.

Youth Manager Lynne Worthington-Bianchi has been with P&O Cruises for 11 years. Having served on all the family-friendly ships in the fleet, she now heads up the Youth Team on board Britannia. Here she talks to us about her role.

‘As Youth Manager, I plan the programmes for all of our playrooms and teenage areas as well as overseeing the entire department with my assistant manager.

‘I’ve got the best job in the world. I get to interact all day with children in a fantastic environment.

‘We work really hard to make every day exciting. We have different facilities and amazing activities for age groups ranging from six months to 17 years. We even take little ones who aren’t yet toilet trained.

‘When you’re away on a family holiday, not only do you want to have fun together as a family, but as parents you also need some time to yourselves to relax. On our ships this is exactly what you get. We have something for everyone, from arts and crafts, game shows and quizzes, to ship hunts and sports games. We have it all.

‘Teenagers are in for a treat. I’ve had lots of fun trying out the interactive dance floor. The table football, pool tables and air hockey are great fun, too. And we’ve also got incredible gaming facilities and the latest gadgets.

‘For the little ones, we put on lots of themed days with imaginative play, games, quizzes and arts and crafts. The Pirate Days, Under the Sea Days and Chocolate Days are some of the really popular ones.

‘I am supported by a fantastic team. We are all from childcare and education backgrounds, fully qualified to level three or above and with enhanced DBS checks. Parents love the fact that they can go and enjoy the ship without worrying about their children.

‘There aren’t that many places where you can have so much fun. Seeing so many happy little faces on each cruise is wonderful.’
