What do you look forward to the most when you’re planning your holiday? Having new experiences is likely to be high on your wish list. And what about eating delicious food? Well, any holiday with P&O Cruises would more than satisfy your wishes on both those counts, but with one of our Food Hero cruises you’ll be able to notch up even more foodie treats. Not only will you experience the excitement of meeting your favourite chefs, you’ll also be able to spend time with them – picking up cooking tips and hearing about their influences and inspirations, perhaps over a good meal and a glass of wine.

We believe that good food is always key to a successful holiday. And if you love food as much as we do, you’ll want to be a part of the new Food Hero cruises we have lined up for 2017.

Food, glorious food

Food is our ‘thing’. We pride ourselves on the quality of our on-board restaurants, our menus, our chefs and the host of people behind the scenes to make sure you enjoy wonderful food, every day, on every cruise. Back in 2014 we took things to another level by introducing our Food Heroes: experts at the top of their game who add an extra dimension to the on-board dining experience.

Not only are our Food Heroes committed to raising the general level of culinary excellence on board, they also want to share their knowledge, passion and skills with as many guests as possible. That’s where our unique Food Hero cruises come in, so that you come away from your holiday with more than a tan line and a smile on your face. You’ll also have a few nifty tricks to practise in the kitchen too!

Our five Food Heroes – one of Britain’s best-loved and most recognisable chefs, James Martin, ‘Godfather of British cooking’ Marco Pierre White, wine expert Olly Smith, master pâtissier Eric Lanlard, and twice Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar – will all be coming on board selected cruises throughout the year to impart their culinary knowledge and tell some entertaining stories along the way. There will be masterclasses, cookery demonstrations, Q&A sessions and book signings. Join them on a foodie tour at selected ports of call – explore the magical region of Galicia, Spain, with Atul Kochhar, for example, or have the chance to enjoy private dining at an exclusive hosted dinner – a unique occasion where you’ll get to meet your favourite chefs in a more intimate setting, with small group numbers and plenty of time to enjoy a good chat over wonderful food.

If you book a Food Hero cruise on board Britannia, you’ll also have the opportunity of cooking alongside our chefs in The Cookery Club. At each two-hour class, you’ll enjoy hands-on tuition with The Cookery Club’s expert team to develop essential techniques and learn all-important presentation skills to take your dishes to the next level.

The fully equipped kitchen has 12 prepping stations with two cooks to each station. If you are booking a session just for you, we’ll pair you up with another cook on the day – the perfect way to make new friends who share your passion.

‘It’s about stripping back all the pretence and giving guests something they can apply at home,’ says Marco, who will be on four Food Hero cruises in 2017. ‘The principles of making delicious pasta, risotto, cooking fish perfectly, for example. It’s about showing guests how easy it is: almost putting them inside the pan, metaphorically speaking, so they can see what’s going on. It’s not about being formal and precious; it’s about making them laugh and express themselves.’

Having sampled a masterclass with Marco on board Azura last year, guests Phil and Bridget Birkett were impressed with how everything was presented: ‘Marco has a way of describing what he’s cooking very succinctly, and he is easy to understand. He makes simple food taste so delicious, and he’s such a down-to-earth man. It’s so easy to learn from him. This masterclass was the cherry on the cake of this cruise.’

Excited?

Whether you’re an accomplished cook already and just want to rub shoulders with the professionals to pick up some tips and tricks, or you’re a complete novice in the kitchen who wants to learn from the masters, opting for a Food Hero cruise will make your holiday even more special. ‘Here at P&O Cruises, we know that great food lies at the heart of a holiday,’ says P&O Cruises senior vice president Paul Ludlow. ‘That’s why we offer dining to suit every mood, with innovative and delicious menus crafted by this country’s top chefs. Our Food Hero cruises take the culinary experience a step further and allow guests to learn from some of the best in the business while still enjoying the holiday of a lifetime.’
