Making history

26/04/2016

Carnival Corporation is to make history this May with the introduction of cruises from Miami to Cuba.

Adonia sailing under the Fathom brand

In a truly historic announcement, Carnival Corporation has been approved as the first cruise company to sail from the United States to Cuba in over 50 years. Adonia, operating under the Fathom brand, will run the historic cruises from this May.

Though Adonia continues to be part of the P&O Cruises fleet, this year she has been reassigned to a new brand venture called Fathom, which focuses on the growing number of people who want to work alongside local communities as part of their travel experience. Impact travel with Fathom provides the opportunity to build a community with like-minded travellers, become immersed in another culture, and work alongside its people to create an enduring social impact. Adonia will be based in America this year and guests will be working on programmes that make a positive social impact on the communities they visit, in areas such as education, the environment and economic development.

Fathom Cuban itineraries feature three ports of call. First up is Havana, the colourful capital of Cuba probably best known for the Spanish-influenced architecture of Old Havana. The coastal city of Cienfuegos is the second port of call and is the centre of Cuba’s sugar, tobacco and coffee trades, while the island’s second largest city, Santiago de Cuba, is the third port of call for which Carnival Corporation has obtained berthing approval.

Cuba has a colourful history

Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation, said: ‘We are excited about Cuban approval and are ready to take travellers there through an extraordinary guest experience on the beautiful MV Adonia. This is a historic opportunity, and we know there is demand among Americans who want to experience Cuba. We believe there is no better way to experience so much of Cuba in seven days. Everyone who sails with us with Fathom to Cuba will have a very special, rewarding and enriching experience with our Fathom brand.’

As part of this historic sailing, travellers will enjoy an exciting Cuban experience and will sail aboard the 704-passenger MV Adonia, where they can enjoy on-board experiences, including Cuban- and Caribbean-inspired music and films and Cuban-inspired menu options. Special on-board programming will include a wide variety of activities covering an array of interests, ranging from an introduction to Cuba's history, customs and culture to conversational Spanish lessons.

‘Our Carnival Corporation and Fathom brand teams have worked closely with Cuba throughout this process and we are thrilled to begin regular sailings to Cuba from Miami starting on May 1, 2016,’ said Tara Russell, President of Carnival Corporation's new Fathom brand. ‘We have been told that we will be the first cruise line to sail from the US to Cuba with our historic inaugural sailing.’
