After a year-long tour of duty with Fathom and a refresh of her interior, the beloved Adonia makes a welcome return to the P&O Cruises fleet

In 2016, Adonia – the smallest of the P&O Cruises ships – was reassigned to a new venture with cruise line Fathom. From June 2017, P&O Cruises is thrilled to welcome Adonia back to its fleet.

Fathom, a sister brand of P&O Cruises, specialises in impact travel and provides guests with the opportunity to build a community with like-minded travellers, become immersed in another culture and work alongside its people to create enduring social change. Fathom was the first social impact cruise line through which guests participated in activities that supported the community in the Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic, and made history as the first cruise company to sail from the United States to Cuba in more than 50 years. The Cuban itineraries featured three ports of call: colourful Havana, the coastal city of Cienfuegos and the island’s second largest city, Santiago de Cuba. Adonia was the perfect ship for the project due to her intimate size, which allowed her to access these smaller ports.

Tom Driscoll is Adonia’s on-board product delivery director and is also playing an instrumental role in her return to P&O Cruises. Reflecting on the extraordinary experience of connecting Americans and Cubans while Adonia was sailing with Fathom, he says: ‘It was amazing to witness the incredible emotions that were displayed by all on board, and the incredible reception the Cuban locals provided, with thousands lining the port channel entrance. The press response was also fantastic, not just in Cuba and America but around the world.’

With her Fathom assignment now complete, Adonia returns to the P&O Cruises fleet. While she’s still the same ship guests know and love, her soft furnishings have been updated and lighter fabrics have been added for a brighter look. Her restaurants have had an update, too: new on board is Olly Smith’s The Glass House, while the Ocean Grill features an enhanced menu, and the buffet is now open seven nights a week. Additionally, Adonia’s entertainment offerings have increased, with more choice than ever offered in venues across the ship. New on board is Magic Moments, a musical show celebrating the talent of legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach. Guests can also take in a Harmony show in the Crow’s Nest, while a Motown show – new to Adonia – will be performed in the Curzon Lounge or on the open deck during deck parties. On-board plays are unique to Adonia, and new for her return is the brilliant Relatively Speaking by illustrious British playwright Alan Ayckbourn.

Adonia’s new cruise collection will be packed with the same exciting opportunities for exploring lesser-known ports, as well as many classic destinations. Between June and October she’ll visit Iberia, the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean, the British Isles and Iceland. For the winter season, Adonia will offer a wealth of different destinations across the sunny Caribbean and parts of South America, including Mayreau and Bequia in St Vincent and the Grenadines and Santarem in Brazil.

Having worked with Adonia for over three years, Tom is quick to sing her praises. ‘Each of our ships is unique and has its own following. Adonia has everything that any cruise ship can offer – such as plenty of choice in dining and entertainment – but what sets her apart is that sense of community on board. You get to see guests and crew members time and time again and build those relationships.

‘On Adonia, you’re given opportunities to have a unique experience. Standing on the ship, looking over your balcony, sailing down the river to Seville, knowing there are not many cruise ships in the world that can do this. That’s what makes her special.’
