Why we love Ventura

24/06/2015

If you’re travelling with family or a group of friends, or even if you’re a couple who love the buzz of lots going on around them, then Ventura is the perfect choice for you

Ventura: something for everyone

In 2015, this larger, family-friendly ship will be cruising mostly in the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean and Iberia, while early in 2016 she’ll head to the Caribbean for a month of winter sun. Step aboard and you’ll soon find your niche. From the comfort of your cabin to sociable bars, great places to eat, a tranquil spa, five pools and entertainment venues galore, you’ll never be stuck for something to do.

Music, lights, action!

Pack your finery and prepare for some memorable nights on board. The Arena Theatre hosts spectacular shows and also doubles up as a cinema. Fancy a shimmy? The Havana show lounge is Ventura’s Cuban themed nightclub, with a stage and dance floor. Meanwhile, the Tamarind Club has an exotic eastern vibe and is a great setting for comedy and live music.

Even enjoying a quiet drink is an experience at jazz bar Metropolis. A floor-to-ceiling video wall displays dramatic cityscapes, so you might gaze ‘out’ upon Paris, New York or Sydney as you sip your cocktail. There are fabulous ‘real’ views by day, too.

Travelling with children?

Don’t worry about them being bored. Our expertly trained Reef Rangers will keep them safely entertained and all activities are included in the price of your holiday. Children are divided into age groups, and each has their own designated space. For example, Splashers (2-4 years) find their fun at the Toybox, with a soft play area, outdoor room and a TV to snuggle in front of when they’re all played out. They will enjoy games, treasure hunts and face painting, while Scubas (9-12 years) can hang out at The Den, with gaming stations, organised pool games, quizzes and drama workshops.

Even if you have a very young child, you can still enjoy a little break. Tumblers has a night nursery: simply pop them in a cot or bed between 6pm and 2am while you go for a meal or catch a show. You’ll be paged if there are any problems and the service is free of charge.

Enjoy some me-time

Children settled? Time to treat yourself. Get your hair or nails done at the Oasis Spa salon, enjoy some beauty therapy, indulge in his-and-hers treatments, relax in the whirlpool spa or sauna, or take a turn in the ‘endless pool’. The Retreat is Ventura’s wonderful open-air spa terrace, with sun loungers, airy cabanas for alfresco treatments, personal waiter service and gorgeous panoramic views. For just a modest fee, here you’ll be guaranteed luxurious, child-free peace and calm.

After a glass of expertly chosen wine at the Glass House (concept of our Food Hero Olly Smith), head to The White Room for a meal to remember. An Italian-inspired venture from another of our Food Heroes, Marco Pierre White, for a modest cover charge you can experience top-notch dining in elegant surroundings.

Be together

Feeling refreshed? If you can tear the children away from their new friends, there are plenty of activities to enjoy as a family. Ventura’s sports court is the place to go for a spot of tennis, cricket, basketball or five-a-side football, while there are always the deck areas for a jog or a game of quoits. There are no less than five pools to choose from, but the Terrace Pool is handily near to the children’s clubs and also the Waterside buffet, which offers flexible dining at any time.

Something for everyone

The Atrium is the hub of the ship, and at 30-feet high it spans three decks. Access all of Ventura’s shops, bars and cafés from here, visit her art gallery, buy a book or a new outfit, or simply people-watch at Tazzine, with Italian-style coffee and sweet treats. Active types can perfect their swing at Ventura’s golf nets or work out at her ocean-view gym, where the fitness team will be on hand to plan a suitable programme. Then, when you want a moment’s peace, simply pull up a deckchair and catch some rays, or spend some time in the cyber study with a coffee, reading up on your next port of call or emailing home.

Special cruises

The first two weeks of December 2015 see Food Hero Atul Kocchar, master of spices, guide us through the cuisine of the Canaries, while in early October 2016, wine buff Olly Smith will be hosting a Food & Wine cruise around the Med, taking in Barcelona, Rome and Lisbon among other ports.

Strictly Come Dancing fans should book themselves a place on the two-week Canaries cruise in May 2016, where they’ll have the chance to watch Strictly stars in action.
