Why is there not a line of waiters in the freedom... in Help & advice

image alt

On the first night of a cruise, a line of waiters are at the door to escort you to your table ensuring that you are sat at the right table so as not to delay service . This also assists with ensuring that you are in the correct restaurant. Freedom dining operates slightly differently as you arrive at your own time. Waiters are still on hand to escort you to a table each and every night, unlike club dining where this happens on the first night only.

What is freedom dining and which restaurants are... in Help & advice

image alt

Freedom dining is a flexible style of cruise dining, where you can arrive at the restaurant at any time between 18.00 and 21.30 and ask to be seated. There are tables sizes ranging from two to eight, which are provided on a first come, first serve basis dependant on the type of booking you have made*. Vast swathes of people from every generation and cultural background count Italian as their favourite kind of food. And this is no real surprise – the cuisine has something for everyone: hearty stews and cold meats, crispy fritto misto and comforting gnocchi al gorgonzola , speedy spaghetti alle vongole ,...

About Venice in Destinations

image alt

This World Heritage city is just about the perfect cruise call because everything you want to see is so easily accessible whether the ship docks just down from St Marks Square or further up the Grand Canal at the main Venice cruise terminal complex. Cars are banned from the maze of narrow cobbled streets and 500 historic bridges within the city centre so there are just the two choices for getting around: the vaporetto (water-bus) network or just plain walking. A gondola ride is really for...

Guadeloupe Port Overview in Destinations

image alt

Guadeloupe is actually two islands - Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre - united by a causeway to form a gigantic, emerald butterfly. Sample delicious, spicy Creole flavours in any of Point-a-Pitre's neighbourhood restaurants.

About Barcelona in Destinations

image alt

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona provides a vivid mix of ancient and modern but is probably best know for the bizarre Art Nouveau architecture of Antonio Gaudi, in particular the iconic Sagrada Familia, Europe's most extraordinary - and still unfinished - cathedral. Boosted by hosting the Olympic Games in 1992, Barcelona's Old Port area has been transformed into a thriving area of cafés and restaurants. From there, it is an easy stroll up the famous Rambla to the old town. Las Ramblas is...

About Laihaina - Maui in Destinations

image alt

Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, the historic town of Lahaina offers a wonderful blend of art galleries, unique shops and restaurants and historic buildings - you can experience it all if you follow the Historic Trail.

About Sydney in Destinations

image alt

One of the world's great cities and harbours, Sydney always lives up to great expectations. When you are on one of our Sydney cruises, the first glimpse of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House will stay in your memory forever. Even before the 2000 Olympics, cruises to Sydney had much to offer - hosting the games just made the city even better with improved facilities and extra dining and entertainment venues all round. From the waterside restaurants fringing the historic Rocks district, the...

Baltic cruises - Norway & Russia cruises in Destinations

image alt

As you sail on our Baltic cruises, you’ll find there is something quite enthralling about the scenery in this part of the world. Gilded cities that cut majestic silhouettes across the sky. Forests that give way to cascading waterfalls. The Baltic landscape has been carved by the ocean and there really is no better way to visit this region than on a cruise. The Baltic opens up an ancient world. Harking back to their Viking ancestry, the residents of the Baltic thrive on ocean life. Fresh fish...

About Adelaide in Destinations

image alt

The first thing to say about the easy-going South Australian city of Adelaide, which sits at the mouth of the Torrens River, is that it is a gourmet's delight with a huge range of restaurants and cafés. Food and wine should always be high on the agenda for any cruise visitor to this European-influenced gateway to the outback. Hot, dry summers (our winters) give the city an almost Mediterranean feel as people spill out onto the streets enjoying outdoor dining or wandering through the...

About Ponta Delgada in Destinations

image alt

A strong Portuguese influence pervades Ponta Delgada from the stylish colonial architecture to the food and wine served in its restaurants.  But that should really come as no surprise as this is the main Portuguese Azores cruise port even if these remote Atlantic islands are 760 miles distant from their parent country. The capital of Sao Miguel, the largest of the nine mountaineous, thickly-forested Azores islands, Ponta Delgada is probably the most spectacularly beautiful, too. It...

About San Sebastian in Destinations

image alt

Former summer residence of the Spanish royal family, San Sebastián has grown from a fishing village to a sophisticated small city with a taste for first-class food. San Sebastian cruises bring you into the birthplace of Basque cuisine. The city is boasting more Michelin-starred restaurants per metre than any other place in the world. Before dinner, why not visit the Alderdi Eder Gardens or wander along the La Concha beach promenade? Alternatively, take a stroll through the old town to...

Ho Chi Minh in Destinations

image alt

Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is Vietnam's most vibrant city, home to more than five million people and a dynamic commercial centre.Catch the buzz in the streets around Saigon Square at the heart of the city's business district, where you will find the best selection of restaurants and shops - look out for old colonial artefacts, traditional silk dresses and fine lacquerwear inlaid with mother of pearl. You can check out the country's fascinating story at the Museum of Vietnamese History,...

About Guam in Destinations

image alt

This most southerly of the Mariana islands once gave food and shelter to the explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Since then the island has had something of a chequered past with the Second World War among the more harrowing chapters. Today its crystal clear waters, colourful coral, plentiful wrecks and an extraordinary diversity of fish make it a popular place for divers.

About Oporto in Destinations

image alt

Oporto is an enchanting, historic city with Roman ramparts and Parisian-style squares. But it's best known for its port wine - to which the city gave its name. The cathedral area is filled with many treasures, like the Renaissance church of Santa Clara and the densely populated quarter of Barredo, which hasn't changed since medieval times. The narrow streets of the riverside quarter of Ribeira are delightful and dotted with fashionable bars and restaurants overflowing with seafood.

Karlskrona in Destinations

image alt

Karlskrona is spread over 30 islands in the eastern part of Blekinge archipelago with the city centre itself situated 6 km out from the mainland proper. You will find exciting places to visit, good shopping and excellent restaurants and cafés to relax in. Everywhere you go here you'll feel close to the sea. The Swedish city also boasts nearby beautiful beaches and cliffs, excellent walking trails, nature reserves and of course the ever-present water.

About Hilo in Destinations

image alt

This spectacular tropical paradise is blanketed in diverse and beautiful scenery, including breathtaking waterfalls and exotic gardens. Travel to 4,300 feet above sea level and visit the unique Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and discover the active volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa. In Hilo itself, you'll find excellent shopping and first class restaurants.

About Akaroa in Destinations

image alt

Akaroa, meaning "long harbour" in Maori, certainly lives up to its name. Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbour, Akaroa is now a popular resort.   Seek out the best spots for dolphin watching with tours from the harbour or relax on land at one of the welcoming bars or restaurants. Alternatively take a tour to Christchurch.

Port Vila in Destinations

image alt

Set around a stunning bay and a number of lagoons and tranquil beaches, Port Vila is the capital and main hub of Vanuatu, a Pacific nation of around 80 islands. The waterfront restaurants and beach bars, and the bustle of the downtown area - with its colourful market stalls selling tasty food and local handicrafts - mean you don't need to venture far to immerse yourself in the finer offerings of island life. But explore a little further and you'll find exciting activities and adventures...

About Gaeta in Destinations

image alt

The genteel town of Gaeta is one of the most beautiful cities in southern Italy. This small town's ancient walls, narrow alleys and seven fabulous sandy beaches, lie in a magnificent location on a sparkling bay. And it's 'the' place to get a feel for the best of southern Italy - great food, friendly locals and a sense of history that ties it all together. Once a defensive stronghold, this town is still partly fortified today. The imposing Angevine-Aragonese castle is currently used by the...

About Aarhus in Destinations

image alt

Aarhus cruises bring you into a lively city boasting many cultural attractions and a welcoming atmosphere. First inhabited by the Vikings over a thousand years ago, today its growing population makes it Denmark's second largest city. Embark on one of our cruises to Aarhus and take a stroll through the old narrow lanes to discover traditional half-timbered houses, many of which have been converted into art shops, pottery workshops, galleries and cafe's. For those Aarhus cruise passengers who...

About Ciudadela in Destinations

image alt

Age before beauty? Not in Ciudadela; its nickname 'Vella I Bella', translates to the old and beautiful. Unsurprisingly it's a very pretty port with an abundance of waterside restaurants lining the quay. Fresh fish that flakes at the mere flash of a fork is a firm favourite (try saying that fast!) Primarily a fishing town, bathers will have to cast their net wider to seek out the sand; the small beaches of Cala Santandria and Sa Caleta are a few miles away. Stay in the centre and you have the...

About St. John, New Brunswick in Destinations

image alt

Located on the Bay of Fundy, Saint John has a vibrant arts centre, quality dining and shopping, pristine parks and history lined streets. One of the city's biggest attractions is the reversing falls of the Saint John river whereby the Bay of Fundy causes the river flow to reverse. The city is also home to Martello Tower, a harbour fortification built during the war of 1812 and Fort Howe with its excellent views over the port.

About Buzios in Destinations

image alt

The seven-mile long Brazilian peninsula of Buzios is South America's equivalent of St Tropez. With sophisticated boutiques, fine restaurants and more than 20 magnificent beaches it became a favourite haunt of the likes of Bridget Bardot back in the 1960s. The resort is centred round Rua das Pedras or Stone Street - a charming paved esplanade filled with bars, eateries and shops. Between here and Ossos Beach is the 'Orla Bardot', where you will find the infamous statue of the French starlet...
