1. Sicily is an island of a thousand surprises

Suspended between history and reality, it offers encounters with untold beauties praised through the ages by the world’s greatest writers.

Located at the foot of the volcano Mount Etna, Catania is full of artistic treasures – many of our churches and the noble palace epitomise the Sicilian Baroque. This majesty is complemented by the friendly courtesy of the locals.

The best Sicilian wines

Life here plays out in the shadow of Etna. It is an iconic presence and a fascinating place to visit. The fertile volcanic soil around Etna creates perfect conditions for growing fine produce. Some of the best Sicilian wines are produced here too, among them Etna Bianco and Rosso, and Nero d’Avola.

Delicious Sicilian specialities

Sicily is famous for its food and there are so many local specialties to try. My favourites are arancini (deep-fried rice balls) and the famous maccheroni alla Norma (pasta with aubergine, pine nuts, chilli and grated cheese). Try them at the restaurants near Cathedral Square and Via Etnea. Sicilians have a sweet tooth – don’t miss our famous cannoli (fried pastry tubes stuffed with sweetened ricotta) and cassata Siciliana (a traditional cake with ricotta and candied fruit). Find them at one of the bakeries close to Piazza del Duomo.

2. Cultural highlights

Catania has so many cultural highlights, among them the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, Massimo Bellini Theatre, the Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena, Villa Bellini gardens and our beach, La Playa.

Beyond Catania, Taormina is a special place. The remarkable Greek Theatre hosts performances overlooking the sweeping bay towards Etna. The village itself is charming, with pretty shops. Take the cable car down to Mazzarò and Isola Bella beaches below. The magnificent mosaics at Roman villa Romana del Casale in the village of Piazza Armerina are another highlight.

For first-time visitors, I suggest combining Taormina or Mount Etna with a wine tasting. For something different, Syracusa, with its archaeological treasures and the old town island of Ortigia, is an unforgettable experience.
