A happy honeymoon staycation on board Britannia

When the pandemic forced newlyweds David and Michelle Miles to abandon their honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean, the pair booked a 4-night staycation on Britannia, and they couldn’t have hoped for a better holiday.

You’ve just returned from your honeymoon on Britannia – congratulations! How was it to be holidaying again after so long?

Finally after three cancelled wedding dates, the fourth was a charm and everything we could have hoped for. We haven’t been on holiday for three years so the honeymoon on Britannia was most welcome.

What were some of the highlights?

We were really spoilt for choice on board. We got tickets for the dinner and show at The Limelight Club where we saw comedy act Eric & Ern, who were brilliant. We visited The Glass House after Olly Smith’s wine talk earlier that day and were lucky enough to bump into the man himself! We chatted to him for ages. We also managed to catch Rocketman, which was fab, as well as a show at Headliners Theatre. We even saw the resident band PULSE at the aft of the ship. They were fantastic.

What made you choose a cruise for your honeymoon?

We weren’t sure what was on offer with restrictions still in place. At first, we thought we would book a stay in the UK but then we had a lightbulb moment and thought ‘let’s just check to see if cruising is back’, and it just so happened that the first P&O Cruises holiday since the start of the pandemic was happening around the time of our wedding. Pre-pandemic we’d booked to go on a Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon and this was as close as we could get. We were so grateful.

What surprised you on this holiday?

How safe we felt with all of the Covid protocols in place and how easy it was at the terminal to board quickly and efficiently.

What was the vibe like on board?

Everyone was absolutely delighted to be back on board again. We spoke to so many guests and we all shared the same excitement of normality returning. What was lovely was how excited the staff on board were to be serving and entertaining guests again.

What did you enjoy about sailing around the UK?

The last time we cruised we were both performers on board. Dave worked on many different cruise ships around the world, and I did a summer contract for Oceana’s inaugural season in 2003. I spent six months as a dancer in the Stadium Theatre Company, so being on board as a guest was everything we expected and more. This cruise was four nights long, departing from Southampton and travelling to Land’s End in Cornwall and back again. All days were at sea with so much to do on board. The weather was superb, and we were very happy to rest and explore the ship. We certainly didn’t run out of things to do.

Do you have a favourite cruise destination?

I’ve sailed once with P&O Cruises while I was working on board, but I’ve followed the fleet ever since. Thinking back, my favourite destinations were Dubrovnik, Pompeii (from Naples) and Copenhagen, though it’s hard to choose.

What do you love most about a P&O Cruises holiday?

I know the level of hospitality that P&O Cruises delivers first-hand, so to experience it as a guest was amazing. We were not left disappointed. P&O Cruises always delivers first-class experiences, and the crew are always so accommodating.

Do you have any favourite venues on board?

We loved The Glass House so much that we visited three times on our 4-night cruise! The Limelight Club has a fabulous vibe and the atrium with its Star Burst ceiling sculpture and acoustic performers was a firm favourite too.

Do you want to try our new ship Iona or has Britannia stolen your heart?

Absolutely; we want to experience Iona! We’re excited to see how P&O Cruises can top the quality and opulence of Britannia but, obviously, with Britannia being our honeymoon destination it would be rude not to revisit her.

Thanks to David and Michelle Miles for sharing their honeymoon story with us. Would you like to join us for a staycation holiday this summer? There's still time to book your ultimate UK getaway. But, please note, the booking window for these cruises close four days before the ship’s departure date.
