Ensuring your time on board feels special



Your holiday is more enjoyable when it's enjoyable for everyone. Your time on board should feel special. As such, we have policies in place to ensure this happens and kindly request that all guests adhere to them.

At all times while on board and during shore excursions, guests are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner and with due regard to the health, safety and enjoyment of all other guests, crew and tour guides. Failure to comply with the code of conduct, disrespectful or offensive behaviour may result in individual guests or whole parties having their holiday terminated and having to make their way home at their own cost.

Safety drills

It is mandatory for all guests to attend safety drills before sailing on embarkation day. Guests will need to bring along their cruise card to the safety drill as the card will be scanned to confirm attendance. Due to the critical importance of your own safety, we kindly request that drills are attended in a timely manner and due attention be given throughout. During this time, we ask that you do not use your mobile phones or consume alcohol.

Large groups

We understand that some guests are looking for a break that lets them mark a special occasion and whilst large groups are welcome, we ask that noise be kept to a reasonable level in all venues and their behaviour must not adversely affect other guests’ cruise experience. Inappropriate behaviour of any sort – including gestures, dress, stunts, practical jokes or language used – is not acceptable in the cruise terminal, during shore excursions or while on board the ship.

Dress code

Dressing for dinner is one of the many highlights on a cruise and guests are expected to follow our dress codes, which change from night to night. There are two dress codes that can apply, effective in the majority of public areas after 6pm. A description of each is provided below. The only exception to these are the official P&O Cruises theme nights which may include 60s, 70s, tropical, Western, and black and white night, and seasonal events such as Halloween and Christmas. Children under 16 years and under are not included in this policy.


Evening Casual: Stylish resort or leisurewear is ideal for Evening Casual nights, for example casual separates or dresses for ladies and open-neck polo shirts and casual trousers (not shorts) for men. A jacket and smart trousers can be worn but are not compulsory. Smart dark denim is also fine, but not trainers, football shirts or tracksuits. For a typical two-week cruise there are normally ten Evening Casual nights.


Black Tie: Our Gala Evenings provide the opportunity for ladies to wear glamorous evening wear including cocktail dresses, ball gowns or smart trouser suits. For men, dinner jackets or tuxedos are the norm, but a dark lounge or business suit and tie can be worn as an alternative. You can also wear formal national dress. For a typical two-week cruise there are normally four Black Tie nights. Attire for Black Tie nights can be purchased on board (limited availability).


Theme nights: Our theme nights offer a great opportunity for guests to dress up in line with the theme. Themes can include 60s, 70s, tropical, Western, and black and white nights.


Children: The dress code for children in the evening is Evening Casual, regardless of the adult dress code but they are welcome to dress to impress too. We do, however ask that children don’t wear denim on Black Tie nights please. When dining in the informal or buffet restaurants children can be casually dressed. If children are going to be with you in the evening in the formal restaurants and theatre, then they can still dress more casually adopting our Evening Casual dress code.


Fancy dress: We don’t want to dampen anyone’s fun but as of 1 January 2018 we no longer allow fancy dress, novelty items or inappropriate personalised clothing to be worn on board. Any clothing that features inappropriate or offensive language, including novelty clothing with printed images or slogans and accessories, will not be allowed on board. We reserve the right to deny embarkation to guests who are inappropriately dressed. This is a change from the policy wording printed in the back of our January 2018 – October 2019 brochure and pre-cruise brochures. This policy does not apply to children 16 and under.

Alcohol policy

We believe that responsible drinking is a valued and enjoyable part of a cruise. However, we ask that our policy for the responsible consumption of alcohol is adhered to at all times. We reserve the right to deny access to the ship to anyone who appears to be heavily under the influence of alcohol. We may also confiscate alcohol in the terminal and at the gangway.


Each guest aged 18 years (21 years in United States of America ports) and older may bring up to 1 ‭litre of wine, Champagne, beer, spirit, or liqueur on board as they embark the ship for the first time ‭only. Alcohol over the 1 litre limit will be stored and returned to the guest prior to the end of the ‭cruise. If this alcohol is consumed in the dining rooms, bars, restaurants or lounge areas, it will be ‭subject to a corkage fee of £20* per bottle, per occasion which will be charged to the guest’s on-‭board account.


‭Coming into effect on 1 February 2018, and for all cruises sailing after this date, any alcoholic beverages purchased mid-cruise in ports of call cannot be consumed on board. Guests will need to declare and ‭hand over any alcohol bought in port at the gangway. It will be stored and returned to the guest ‭prior to the end of the cruise, at no charge.


‭‭If a bottle of wine/Champagne has been bought for a guest through P&O Cruises gifts, guests will ‭need to ensure they carry the gift card with them to avoid having the corkage charge applied to their ‭on-board account.


‭‭On eligible cruises, guests are welcome to buy duty free alcohol to take home via the on-board ‭shops. It will be stored until the end of their cruise.


‭‭Should guests wish to enjoy a drink in their cabin, they will be able to refer to the in-cabin directory ‭which has a selection of spirits and wines which can be purchased by the bottle, as well as our ‭extensively-stocked mini bars in all cabins.


‭The consumption and enjoyment of alcohol in a public area will always be subject to our responsible ‭drinking policy. Bar staff may refuse service if a guest appears to be inebriated. Any ‭offensive or unruly behaviour may result in individuals or the whole group being asked to leave the ‭venue. Dangerous or violent behaviour is not acceptable and may result in individual guests or whole ‭parties having their holiday terminated and having to make their way home at their own cost. ‭Anyone under the age of 18 (under 21 when in United States of America waters) will not be served ‭alcoholic beverages on board and must not be in possession of alcohol. Please don’t be offended if ‭we ask you to verify your age.


It is prohibited to attempt to purchase alcohol for those under 18 in the bars and shops on board, although 16 and 17 year olds may be bought modest amounts of beer, cider or wine to drink with a meal in the restaurants when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
