The Catalonian capital of Barcelona provides a vivid mix of ancient and modern but is probably best know for the bizarre Art Nouveau architecture of Antonio Gaudi, in particular the iconic Sagrada Familia, Europe's most extraordinary - and still unfinished - cathedral.

Boosted by hosting the Olympic Games in 1992, Barcelona's Old Port area has been transformed into a thriving area of cafés and restaurants. From there, it is an easy stroll up the famous Rambla to the old town. Las Ramblas is thronged with street entertainers, stalls and bars and is most lively at night and weekends. Not to be missed is the La Boqueria food market with its extraordinary displays of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables.

Some of the best food in Spain can be found in the city - paella is a speciality - and the restaurant Cal Pep was recently named as one of the top 50 places to eat in the world.

Barcelona for Families

Explore Barcelona on a tour especially designed for families. See the highlights with expert ‘child-friendly’ guides and have fun with interactive games.

Designed to entertain both children and adults, this tour provides a memorable experience that will capture the attention of the entire family. Through songs, games, and with the aid of an interactive booklet, families will experience an engaging and instructive approach to the city of Barcelona.

Departing the port by coach, you’ll head to the Gothic Quarter for an outside visit to the Santa Cruz Cathedral, before playing the ‘Find the Dragons’ game!

Afterwards, a short transfer will take you to the Sagrada Familia, during which the guide will briefly tell the story of Gaudì and his church, and you can play the next game in the booklet. Once in front of the great unfinished Cathedral, children will be encouraged to make up their own ideas about how to finish this landmark, and draw it their booklet.

Next, a visit will be made to Park Güell, where entertainers will perform some of the other games in the interactive booklet, before you enjoy a traditional snack.

Continue by coach to the ‘Gaudì houses’ area for a walking tour along the 3 most famous houses in Barcelona; Casa Batlo, Casa Morera and Casa Amatler. Along the way, play the related game in the booklet, which involves drawing an imaginary house based on what has just been seen.

Finally, enjoy approximately 1 hour of free time in ‘La Rambla’, before the return journey to the ship.

 Barcelona for Families

Barcelona at Night with Tapas

See the city sights at night, enjoying the gorgeous evening atmosphere as well as sampling some tasty tapas.

Your city tour will start with a panoramic drive heading towards Tibidabo Hill, the highest point in Barcelona to enjoy one of the most privileged and magnificent views over the city at night. A brief photo stop will be made, where your guide will point out some of the main highlights of the city.

Next, you’ll head to the Gothic Quarter for a guided walk through some of the narrow streets of the Old Town. Pass by the Santa Eulailia’s Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in the city and experience the mysterious atmosphere of the main squares at night.

Following your pleasant stroll through the Old Town, it will be time to sample 3 typical Spanish tapas dishes at a nearby restaurant. ‘Tapas’ is not a particular food, but rather a way of eating it, best defined as the tradition of enjoying small portions of different foods or ‘finger foods’. Common tapas dishes include Spanish omelette, fried squid and ‘pincho moruno’ (pork skewers).

Afterwards, proceed to the old harbour and enjoy some free time to enjoy Barcelona’s seafront promenade, before returning to your ship.

Free Time at 3 Sights

The perfect option for those of you who prefer to sightsee on your own.

This is an unguided transfer between 3 of Barcelona’s popular attractions; Gaudi’s uniquely fantastical Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family) Basilica, the Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) with its quarters which replicate the many different styles of houses and architecture from various regions of Spain, and the central shopping district of the city, Plaza Catalunya.

This is a great and economical opportunity to tailor your day around some of Barcelona’s most popular sights, exclusive of tour guides or groups.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. This tour is unguided and exclusive of lunch. The entrance fee for the Spanish Village is included in the cost of your tour, all other entrance fees are not included and are payable locally. Time spent at the sights will be approximately 45 minutes at the Sagrada Familia, 45 minutes at the Spanish Village and 60 minutes at Plaza Catalunya before you return to the ship. Due to parking restrictions there is a 15 minute walk each way to the Sagrada Familia. Each coach has a coordinator onboard who will ensure that the timings are adhered to, they will not be offering guided talks or walks at any of the sights.

City Drive, Aquarium and Shops

Enjoy a city drive of Barcelona combined with a visit to Barcelona’s famous Aquarium; the perfect combination of culture and fun!

Your tour begins with a leisurely drive through the city of Barcelona, passing by the iconic Columbus Monument and the bottom of the famous promenade of ‘La Ramblas’. Continue your drive along Passeig Gracia, one of the major avenues containing several of the city’s most celebrated pieces of architecture. Soak up the culture on offer as your guide points out the renowned buildings of Casa Milà and Casa Batlo, 2 of Antonio Gaudi masterpieces.

Following your orientation drive through the city, you’ll arrive at the city’s most unique attraction, the Church of Sagrada Familia for an outside visit and photo stop. Started in 1882 and still unfinished, the extraordinary church with its profuse decoration is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The L’Aquarium de Barcelona was opened in 1995 and is the largest Mediterranean-themed aquarium in the world. Your visit to the aquarium will give you the opportunity to see some of 11,000 animals and 450 species housed in 6 million litres of water. Enjoy the unforgettable walk through the 80-metre long underwater tunnel as you get up close and personal to sharks, sun fish and other species in the oceanarium.

After your visit, free time will be given for shopping at Moll Maremagnum shopping centre, before your return journey to the ship.

Dragon Hunting with Tapsy – Family Tour

Set youngsters on a dragon hunt as you discover the sights of Barcelona’s Gothic area together on this guided walking tour.

This family-friendly walking tour starts with a short shuttle bus transfer into the city centre, followed by a short walk to the Gothic quarter or Barrio Gótico.

To keep young minds entertained, children will get an activity booklet, featuring Tapsy – a loveable character who will bring their dragon quest to life. Along the way to the old town, you’ll learn interesting facts about Columbus and the city while children can make a start on booklet activities.

Once you arrive, you’ll be guided to the magnificent Santa Cruz Cathedral where you can admire the exterior and start the game of ‘Find the Dragons’. As you explore the labyrinthine streets, your guide will point out the sights and bring the area to life. Taspy’s games will keep the children amused as you stroll past elegant architecture and pretty squares. Many of the buildings date to the 18th and 19th centuries but the old town also holds the remains of Roman and medieval walls.

During the walking tour, a snack of ‘melindros’ (traditional biscuits served with a chocolate bar) will be enjoyed by the brave dragon hunters.

Afterwards, you’ll have about 30 minutes of free time at La Rambla before taking the shuttle bus back to the ship.

Essential information

This tour is operated by by shuttle bus and on foot. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking over paved ground, with 10 steps at the front of the cathedral and 20 inside. Climbing the steps is optional. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. Guests are advised to carry a bottle of water and wear sun protection. Guests may choose to stay in the city at the end of the tour and make their way back to the ship at their leisure.
