The approach to Gothenburg's cruise port is the perfect introduction to this large, bustling, but very friendly Swedish city. Embark on a cruise to Gothenburg and you will sail through a beautiful archipelago of small islands and past sleepy old fishing villages along the mainland coast.

Your first impression of the city will be that it is so very green - there are parks and gardens galore including some extraordinarily colourful botanical ones full of rare orchids, roses and butterflies. While enjoying your Gothenburg cruise take the opportunity to visit the Liseborg Amusement Park which has some eye-popping theme park rides but it is also beautifully landscaped with flowers and plants.

For shopping enthusiasts, Gothenburg cruises offer a diverse collection of retails stores and venues to enhance their shopping experience. In the city centre, there are all the latest designer stores and an array of cafés and restaurants in or around the main street: the Avenue. Canal Cruise and City Orientation

This city combination is an ideal way to experience Gothenburg.

Enjoy a scenic tour of Gothenburg, starting with a magnificent view over the city and port from behind Masthuggs Church. Pass Götaplatsen, with the famous Poseidon Fountain, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Concert Hall and the Municipal Theatre. Drive along the main street of Avenyn and at Gustav Adolf’s Square, you’ll see the City Hall, the Court House and the Stock Exchange. Stop to see the day’s catch at Feskekyrkan, the Fish Market, before travelling to Kungsbroplatsen where your mode of transport changes.

A ‘Paddan’ or ‘Toad’ is the typical sightseeing boat of the city. Step aboard and enjoy a canal cruise passing the old moat and canals dating from the 17th century.

Glide under low bridges, including the extremely low Osthyveln (cheese slicer) bridge, which brings you to the fascinating harbour full of traditional shipyards, new and old housing, expanding commercial and academic sites and the Maritime Museum.

Please note that when passing under certain bridges on the canal cruise, you’ll need to sit on the floor of the boat and keep your head low, as the bridges are so low you cannot remain seated on the chair. Christmas City by Land and Sea

Soak up Gothenburg’s Christmas atmosphere during a leisurely cruise, followed by a panoramic coach tour.

After a short coach ride, you’ll board your boat for a delightful Cruise along the inner harbour. As you relax on board, you’ll soon be filled with Christmas spirit, as you indulge in a glass of mulled wine!

During your cruise, your knowledgeable guide will enlighten you with interesting facts about the harbour’s history and development, from the 17th and 18th century up until the present day. You’ll also be served a typical Swedish Christmas 'fika' Saffron bun, accompanied by a cup of coffee.

Afterwards, re-join your coach for a panoramic tour of the Christmas City. In the heart of the city you’ll pass Götaplatsen, with its famous Poseidon Fountain, Museum of Fine Arts, Concert Hall and Municipal Theatre. You’ll then drive along Avenyn, the grand boulevard of Gothenburg before passing by Liseberg, home to Scandinavia’s largest Christmas Market.

This excursion will operate by coach, boat and on foot. Although there is minimal walking on this tour, passengers are required to board the boat via a plank or a few steps. Once on board the boat, there are several flights of stairs.

Christmas City by Land and Sea

Enjoy a glimpse of Sweden’s 2nd largest city.

Designed by Dutch architects, Gothenburg is reminiscent of Amsterdam with its network of streets separated by canals. Its wealth of parks and open spaces has given Gothenburg a reputation as Sweden’s greenest city.

Your panoramic drive will take you up behind the port to Masthuggs Church for a spectacular view, then on to Götaplatsen, the cultural hub of the city, flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts, the Concert Hall, the Municipal Theatre and the Library. The Square is dominated by Carl Milles’ imposing sculpture of Poseidon.

Travel along Gothenburg’s loveliest and busiest street, Avenyn, passing the City Hall, the Court House and the Stock Exchange. The aptly named Fish Church is located on the Rosenlunds Canal and resembles a place of worship, but is actually an indoor fish market. Enjoy a short stop at the ‘Feskekyrkan’ to take a look at the day’s catch.

Gothenburg and Christmas Market

The festive Liseberg Christmas Market is a highlight in the Swedish calendar attracting visitors from all over the world.

Begin your tour with a panoramic drive of ‘The Christmas City’ of Gothenburg. Drive up to the Masthuggs Church for a magnificent view of the city and the port area. Then, pass Götaplatsen, with the famous Poseidon Fountain, by Carl Milles, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Concert Hall and the Municipal Theatre. From here you’ll drive along the main street and Grand Boulevard en route to the Fish Market and then you’ll arrive at the highlight of your tour – Liseberg. Liseberg Park is transformed at Christmas time with Christmas trees, garlands and millions of sparkling lights. The market stalls are rustic cabins offering unique traditional arts and crafts, knitwear and homemade delicacies that make perfect Christmas gifts. The Market opens at 3 pm and you will have 2 hours to stroll around the grounds and explore the 80 or more cabins packed with Christmas fayre. Why not try some hot-spiced wine, pause and listen to one of the choirs singing Christmas carols, or take a ride on a carousel. The choice is yours.

Events or attractions, which have a fare within the park, are payable directly and not included in the tour. Belongings should not be left on any tour coaches as you may not return to the ship on the same coach.

Gothenburg Christmas City and Haga

Enjoy a festive glimpse of Gothenburg, ‘the Christmas City’, including a guided walk of its oldest neighbourhood.

Following an initiative in 2004 to bring warmth and cheer to Gothenburg’s city centre during winter time, the ‘Christmas City’ was born. Today facades of buildings are bathed in light, trees are outlined in thousands of blue bulbs and fresh garlands and wreaths are strewn everywhere. It is simply – seasonal, elegant and innovative.

Your tour begins with a scenic drive to the charming and oldest neighbourhood of Haga. Upon arrival, your knowledgeable guide will lead you on a leisurely stroll along the romantic pedestrian street Haga Nygata, lined with delightful wooden houses. Today, these well-preserved wooden houses have been converted into independent shops and cafés.

Relax over refreshments of tea or coffee and a sweet bun at one of the traditional cafés, before enjoying some free time to explore further.

Afterwards, embark on a panoramic drive of the ‘Christmas City’, encompassing some of the main highlights including Avenyen, the main street and the Grand Boulevard of Gothenburg which is host to many restaurants, bars and shops. Pause for photos at Masthuggs Church, which offers a magnificent view of Gothenburg and the port, before continuing to Gustav Adolfs Square, where you’ll see the City Hall, the Court House and the Stock Exchange. You’ll also pass Götaplatsen, the cultural hub of the city with the famous Poseidon Fountain, by Carl Milles, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Concert Hall and the Municipal Theatre.

As you drive through this festive city you will get a glimpse of Liseberg, the biggest Christmas Market in Scandinavia, which for the season is decorated with almost 5 million Christmas lights.
