About Port of Spain

Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad & Tobago, has an incredibly striking 'Red House' parliament building - originally designed in Greek revival style, built in panels and shipped over from England! Independence Square is a popular place to congregate and houses some of the city's finest architecture including the grand Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Seek refuge in peaceful Woodford Square, with its beautiful gardens and grand Victorian fountain or the city's largest open space, Queen's Park Savannah, spanning 260 glorious acres.

Port of Spain occupies Trinidad's northern coast between the Gulf of Paria, Northern Range and the Caroni Swamp. Northern Range is a string of hills with stark ridges and lush rainforest. The highest peaks are El Cerro del Aripo and El Tucuche, each over 900m tall. The 3278-hectare west coast mangrove area, Caroni Swamp, has 160 native bird species including striking national symbol, the Scarlet Ibis.

Asa Wright Nature Centre

Experience nature’s beauty and catch sight of birds and butterflies at the world-famous Asa Wright Nature Centre.

The Asa Wright Nature Centre is set in 200 acres of the thickly forested Arima Valley and was established in 1967 by a group of naturalists and bird watchers. The bird sanctuary and conservation and study centre was created for the protection of wildlife and was one of the first nature centres to be established in the Caribbean.

Upon arrival, local guides will take you on an optional leisurely trek in the beautiful, natural surroundings and point out the wealth of birdlife. Keep an eye out for exotic birds such as toucans, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds. Also look out for the graceful and colourful species of butterflies as you walk with your guide. If you prefer not to join the walk, you can relax in the lovely surroundings on the veranda of the Old Plantation House. From the veranda you may also catch a glimpse of a variety of colourful birds and butterflies. During your visit a delicious Creole-style buffet lunch will be served.

The peaceful, elegant ambience of this unique centre in the middle of the rainforest will make your visit to the island truly unforgettable.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by minibus and on foot. The venue is not wheelchair accessible. The drive to the Asa Wright Centre takes approximately 1½ hours each way along a highway. The leisurely guided trek takes around 1 – 1 ½ hours over forest terrain, which may get slippery when wet. Long trousers, comfortable non-slip shoes and insect repellent are recommended. Sightings of wildlife are very high but cannot be guaranteed.

Caroni Wetland Boat Ride

Embark on a tranquil boat ride along the Caroni wetland in search of some of Trinidad’s birdlife and wildlife.

Caroni is a 40 square mile wetland area located in the northwest of Trinidad, part mangrove swamp and part lagoon. Upon arrival, you’ll board your boat and travel slowly along the peaceful waterways and lagoon. During your boat ride, keep a look out for a variety of birds and wildlife whilst admiring the beauty of the surrounding scenery.

Caroni is an area of eco tourism and a sanctuary for birdlife. Species such as the Neotropical Cormorant, Large-Billed Tern, Tri-Coloured Heron, Red Capped Cardinal and Bi-Coloured Canebill, can often be seen here. You may be lucky and catch sight of some mangrove and swamp marine life or perhaps even spot a Tree Boa in the overhanging branches.

After your boat ride, you’ll take the return drive to Port of Spain.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by minibus, boat and on foot. The boats are flat bottom rowing-style boats and are uncovered with no shade. Please ensure you take a bottle of water, plenty of sun protection and insect repellent. Flat, non-slip shoes are recommended. In the event of rain a plastic covering will be used for shelter. A degree of agility is required to board the boat and there is a step to negotiate when getting on to and off the boat. Sightings of birdlife and wildlife cannot be guaranteed. There are no toilets available during the boat ride which lasts approximately 2 hours.

City and Cricket Museum

Combine a tour of this vibrant city with a visit to ‘the home of Brian Lara and West Indies Cricket’, Queen’s Park Oval.

Your tour begins with an informative scenic drive around Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. Enjoy the atmosphere and musical beat of this bustling city known for its huge Carnival. Pass by the lighthouse and striking Parliament building known as the ‘Red House’. Marvel at the ‘Magnificent Seven’, a row of imposing colonial houses originally built at the turn of the century as private residences.

Continuing around the Queen’s Park Savannah, you’ll make a brief stop at the tropical Botanical Gardens and President’s House, a cool shady enclave of exotic trees and tropical flowers. Then it’s just a short drive to Lady Young Lookout for an excellent panoramic view of Port of Spain. On a clear day you can see as far as Venezuela!

Afterwards, make your way to the Queen’s Park Oval International Cricket Ground. Opened in 2009 the museum at the Oval houses Brian Lara memorabilia and showcases the history of West Indian cricket. After a tour of the museum with your knowledgeable guide you are free to walk around the grounds and absorb the ambiance of this ‘hallowed turf’ of international cricket.

Your return drive will take you around the Oval where local artists have their art on display, before you continue back to the ship.

City and Cricket Museum

City Highlights and Folkloric Show

Sample the cultural delights of this vibrant destination and take in the sights of Trinidad’s capital.

The Trinidad Carnival is famous world over and second only to the Rio Carnival. This tour allows you to sample some of the vibrant and dramatic displays of song and dance. On arrival, you’ll be greeted with a rum or fruit punch and shown to your seats. During the Folkloric Show, you can listen to the rhythms of a steel drum player and calypso music, and see mesmerising folkloric dancing - all of which blend into a potpourri of sound and colour.

Your tour includes a scenic drive around Port of Spain, taking in the main highlights of this lively capital. You’ll see the ‘Magnificent Seven’ colonial houses at the Queen’s Park Savannah. You’ll also make a short stop at the Botanic Gardens and see the gracious 19th century President’s House. At the Lady Young Lookout, take in the views over the city and ocean beyond.

Enjoy the city sights and experience the serenity of Mount St Benedict Monastery, known as The Abbey of Our Lady of Exile.

At the edge of Trinidad’s rainforest, you’ll ascend to Mount St Benedict Monastery, nestled peacefully in the mountains. The Brazilian monk originally founded the Monastery as a refuge for monks and others suffering religious persecution. Your guide will provide a cultural and historic perspective of the monks that have lived here.

Refreshments of tea and snacks will be served on the Guest house Veranda, overlooking the Monastery’s lovely garden.

During the scenic sightseeing portion of this tour, you’ll take a ride through the city, passing the striking Parliament building known as Red House as well as the row of impressive houses making up the ‘Magnificent Seven’. Continuing around the Queen’s Park Savannah, you’ll make a brief stop at the Botanical Gardens. Then, it’s a short drive to the Lady Young Lookout for an excellent panoramic view of Port of Spain.

This excursion will operate by minibus. This tour involves around 40 minutes of walking over relatively flat ground. Passengers must be able to negotiate steps onto and off the coach and there are around 9 steps to negotiate during the tour.
