A Glimpse of Gulangyu

Escape from the hustle and bustle of Xiamen with a trip to the scenic eco-island of Gulangyu.

Embark your exclusive ferry to the scenic eco-island of Gulangyu. Gulangyu is renowned for its delicate natural beauty, ancient relics, varied architecture and is also completely car free.

When you arrive at Gulangyu, you’ll travel to Shuzhuang Garden by trolley cart where you will be able to appreciate the calm and quiet environment. Feel the gentle breeze and enjoy the sea view as you travel along the coastal road to Shuzhuang Garden. Continue on foot through this exquisitely designed garden that was once a private estate of a wealthy family from Taiwan. You will also have the chance to visit China’s only Piano Museum with a large collection of precious pianos from all over the world.

Soak up the stunning coastal views from one of the islands many vantage points before walking through the old consulate area. Admire the charming old colonial buildings and villas that represent the unique architectural style of a bygone era.

As you stroll back to the ferry pier through the meandering alleys you can feast your eyes on an array of exotic local seafood and shop for souvenirs in the small boutiques along the way.

This excursion will operate by coach and ferry. The ferry transfer is exclusive to P&O Cruises. On arrival in Gulangyu passengers will be divided into 2 groups, group 1 will operate the itinerary as above and group 2 will operate the itinerary in reverse. Local currency should be carried for any purchases. There is approximately 2 hours of walking on this excursion.

City of the Silk Road

Visit the legendary city of Quanzhou, the starting point of the Chinese ancient ‘Silk Road on the Sea’.

Quanzhou was the biggest port in the Orient between the years 960-1300 and the Chinese State Council lists it as one of the most famous historical and cultural cities in China.

Upon arrival in Quanzhou you will visit the fascinating Kaiyuan Temple. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Province. The temple features twin pagoda’s standing over 120 feet high and the main hall is supported by 86 stone columns inscribed with images of magicians and sacred animals. Discover the intriguing history of this magnificent temple before enjoying a traditional Chinese lunch in a local hotel.

Continue on foot to Tumen Street, this was once a place where merchants from the East and Near East used the ancient Silk Road on the Sea to export of Chinese goods to their homelands. Nowadays, historical remains can be found amid this thriving commercial and cultural street.

One of the most significant structures in China, Qingjing Temple, can also be found on Tumen Street. The Temple was built during the Song Dynasty and has drawn on the inspiration of the Islamic churches in Damascus, Syria. Pass by the grand entrance for a photo stop before returning to Xiamen.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. Photography is forbidden inside some areas of Kaiyuan Temple. There is approximately 2 hours walking on this excursion, flat comfortable shoes are recommended.

Leisurely Xiamen

Experience old and new on a leisurely tour around Xiamen.

Travel from old Xiamen to new by coach and visit Bailuzhou Park. The park is situated on an island in the city’s Yundang Lake, and is known as the “green lung” of the city due to its vast green areas. Take a short walk with your guide to the symbol of Xiamen, the Egret Goddess statue, and then enjoy some time at leisure to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the park.

Continue your tour with a drive through the old quarter of the city where 18th century architecture blends with traditional Cantonese style buildings, giving the area a distinct flavour.

Sit back and relax as your coach travels the coastal road, and catch glimpses of beautiful beaches and the nearby islands of Gulangyu and Jinmen. A photo stop will be made for you to capture the impressive vistas on camera.

Immerse yourself in the daily lives of the locals on the most popular shopping street in Xiamen – Zhongshan Road. This busy pedestrianised shopping area is lined with a kaleidoscope of architectural styles and a plethora of stores selling local souvenirs, clothing, books and local art. Enjoy some free time here before returning to the ship.

Please carry local currency for any purchases. Passengers are recommended to wear casual clothing and flat, comfortable shoes. The order of sights visited may vary depending on local conditions.

Traditions of Xiamen

Delve into the cultural traditions of South China with a visit to the famous Ciji Palace and South Putuo Temple.

Ciji Palace is nestled within the Dongming mountain range in village of Qingjiao, a short coach journey from Xiamen. The well preserved palace, also known as East Palace was built in 1151 during the Song Dynasty, is now a Cultural Heritage site under state protection.

Ciji Palace is set amongst a quiet and beautiful landscape with the Qishan Mountain providing a stunning backdrop. Tour the inside of the Palace with your guide, and view the rooms and treasures that include a colourful painting of a sacred animal, with the head of a phoenix, tail of a dragon, the body of a turtle and four legs.

Continue by coach to visit one of the most revered and famous Buddhist temples in southern China. South Putuo Temple is an active temple with over 200 monks and was first built more than 1,000 years ago during the Tang Dynasty. Visit the Heavenly King Hall, home to the statue of a huge laughing Buddha representing the Buddha of the future and flanked by ferocious statues of the four heavenly kings. The temple has also served as a home and a training centre for men and women seeking the enlightened path since 1924.

Sit back and soak up some of the area’s stunning scenery as you travel along the coastal highway back to your ship.
