Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Guidance for non-British and non-Irish passport holders travelling to the UK
From 2025, there will be further changes for non-British and non-Irish passport holders travelling to the UK. If you plan to visit or transit through the UK (including on a P&O Cruises holiday), you may need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in advance to gain permission.
The information on this page reflects UK government guidance in place on 27 November 2024. Please check the UK government website for the most up-to-date information before you travel.
From the dates shown below, ETAs are needed for all EU and non-EU citizens, including babies and children aged under 18, who don’t require a visa for short stays or don’t have UK immigration status.
Dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship won't need an ETA if they travel to the UK on a British or Irish passport, or a passport showing an eligible certificate of entitlement.
Non-EU nationals
ETA applications for eligible non-EU nationals are open from 27 November 2024. ETAs for non-EU nationals are required for travel to the UK from 8 January 2025.
Nationals from Gulf Cooperation Council countries
It’s already a requirement for nationals of Gulf Cooperation Council countries to have an ETA to travel to the UK.
EU nationals
ETA applications for eligible EU nationals can be submitted from 5 March 2025. ETAs for EU nationals will be needed for travel to the UK from 2 April 2025.
You can apply for an ETA from the UK government on the official ETA website or via the UK ETA app (available on Google Play and the Apple App Store). Please carry proof of your ETA status (either a printout or a screenshot) for the duration of your holiday, as you’ll need to present this when asked.
Please submit your ETA application well in advance of your holiday in case the decision takes a while. There is usually a charge for each ETA and, once granted, your ETA will be valid for a period of two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first), at which point a new ETA will be needed.
For more information on obtaining an ETA for your holiday, visit the official UK government website. You can also watch this video about ETA applications.
