Shore excursions are a great way to get the most out of the destinations you’ll visit on a cruise. From seeing iconic sights to immersing yourself in the local culture, exciting opportunities await at each port of call.

To celebrate 180 years of P&O history, we’ve created a series of Wanderlust Packages, which include two places on a unique shore excursion in some of our most popular destinations. Each excursion features a small group tour that visits the must-see sights or an off-the-beaten-track experience, giving you a chance to see your favourite ports in a different light.

Additionally, guests who book a Wanderlust Package will also receive a copy of The Travel Book, a beautiful Lonely Planet publication featuring more than 400 high-gloss pages packed with 850 images from 230 countries. Breathtaking photography illustrates this guide to every country in the world (plus a selection of dependencies and principalities), highlighting what to see, do, eat, drink and more. It’s the perfect companion for globetrotters and armchair travel buffs alike. The book will be delivered to your cabin on the day of the excursion and if you’re on a fly-cruise, we can post it home for you.

There are 33 Wanderlust Packages available across a number of ports, covering everything from food and wine tours to home visits to historical and cultural excursions. Here, we’ve selected five highlights.

Margi Farm Experience

Kalyvia, Attica, Greece (tours from Piraeus)

From the bustling port of Piraeus, the gateway to Athens, this excursion takes you out to the countryside for a contrasting experience. The Margi Farm is set on 20 acres of land surrounded by vineyards and olive trees in the Kalyvia region of Attica. The family-run farm prides itself on using natural, organic farming methods, and the family welcomes the chance to share their story and their passion. During your visit, you’ll see the farm’s animals and take a guided walk around the vegetable garden. There will also be a cooking demonstration from the in-house chef, and a delicious lunch will be served outdoors.

Mingle with the Venetians

Venice, Italy

Venice’s bàcari are a seemingly endless collection of charming local wine bars that also serve irresistible bite-sized snacks, or cicchetti – a bit like a Venetian version of tapas. Each establishment tries to outdo the competition with its own tasty morsels, and while you may come across variations of the same dishes, you’ll soon establish your favourites. You’ll have the chance to tour these wine bars, sample their treats and wash it all down with a local wine or a spritz – a potent mixture of white wine, Campari and soda water. The bàcari are also a great place to socialise and soak up traditional Venetian life.

Rock of Ages

Hidden tunnels, great sieges and a 100-ton gun: discover what life was like for the inhabitants of the Rock of Gibraltar on this fascinating tour. Take in the spectacular views as you ascend the Rock in a cable car. From the Top Station, you’ll descend to the Middle Station, where Gibraltar’s famous apes – the only wild apes or monkeys found in Europe – often congregate. Next, it’s a short drive to Princess Caroline’s Battery and the entrance to the Great Siege Tunnels. Walk through Windsor Gallery to St George’s Hall, and as you leave the tunnels you’ll see the runway that was built during the Second World War when Gibraltar was used as a naval base.

Norwegian Home Visit

Stavanger, Norway

What better way to immerse yourself in Norwegian culture than to visit the home of a local? The people of Stavanger are proud of their city and are keen to share it with you, and this excursion provides a relaxed way to get an up-close-and-personal look at the local way of life. You’ll be greeted with a warm welcome from your host, who will then enlighten you on what Norwegian life is really like. Curious about the décor, or want to know which plants grow best in the garden? Just ask. Your host will also talk about traditional Norwegian customs, including their colourful national costume, which will be on display. Tea, coffee and delicious homemade waffles will be served, too.
