Bon Viveur launches on Britannia

27/03/2015

Food Hero Olly Smith introduces his new wines blended especially for P&O Cruises guests

Award-winning wine expert Olly Smith

Our Food Hero and wine guru Olly Smith is thrilled to reveal his range of wines, exclusive to P&O Cruises. The Bon Viveur collection, which includes a smooth red, zesty white and fruity rosé, is available at The Glass House bar on board Britannia. There are also plans to roll out the tasty tipples across the rest of the fleet soon.

The process has been a labour of love for Olly. After spending hours with fellow experts at blind tastings, the aficionados agreed that two suppliers in southwest France would be the chosen ones to provide the grapes, Plaimont and Celliers Jean d’Alibert. Olly then travelled to the Gascony and Languedoc regions to painstakingly blend the wines by hand, resulting in his own unique, signature blends.

First up, the Bon Viveur white is a Colombard/Ugni Blanc, perfect for fans of zingy Sauvignon Blancs. Refreshing, with a lingering citrus buzz, its ideal served on its own as an aperitif, or with fresh fish or salad dishes.

For many, the slightly sweet taste of rosé conjures up the idea of summertime. Olly recommends pairing his drop with a huge range of dishes, from salads to shellfish, light meats to nibbles, and of course, served chilled on its own.

Red wine lovers will not be disappointed with the Bon Viveur Red. A blend of Grenache and Syrah grapes make it fruity, fragrant and slightly spicy, best enjoyed with meaty dishes as well as spicy ones.

So how did Olly finally decide on these particular blends? He put his taste buds to the test of course. ‘These are the wines that I love to sip and share when I’m on holiday,’ he reveals. And if they’re good enough for this knowledgeable Food Hero, you’re definitely in for a treat.

Either with or without food, the overarching idea was to create something that’s easy to drink: ‘I believe that wine should be about informality,’ Olly explains. ‘A journey of discovery for your taste buds to share with friends and family. If you share a glass of wine, it enhances and improves the moment.’

Britannia is packed to the rafters with culinary treats, but Olly insists that all guests must pop in to The Glass House. ‘Whether you’re new to cruising, or you’re somebody who’s already enjoyed The Glass House on another ship, you’ll find something new and exciting on its wine list on Britannia,’ he promises. ‘In fact, you’ll find something that’s going to make your holiday feel just a little bit more glorious.’

Cheers Olly! We’ll drink to that.
