Orange Blossom

Orange has always been my favourite colour. A sunset, the peel of the fruit, a shadow cast through a jar of marmalade: I adore it in all its guises. I also adore the scent of orange blossom, a treat I fleetingly enjoyed on occasional visits to southern Spain in the springtime. Orange blossom in the air offers a dreamy, sweetening distance between time and intent. It makes me dawdle. There’s always an excuse to slow down and dwell more deeply when orange blossom hangs in the air – and this drink does the same. It is an invocation to time off and well worth creating. Rather than say it’s a favourite, I shall merely say that this cocktail is even more scrumptious than you imagine it might be.

45ml (11/2oz) gin
15ml (1/2oz) triple sec
45ml (11/2oz) orange juice
15ml (1/2oz) freshly squeezed lime juice
7.5ml (1/4oz) grenadine

Ice: Cubed
Garnish: Orange twist
Equipment: Cocktail shaker, strainer

Fill a shaker with ice
Add all the ingredients
Shake vigorously to chill
Strain into a glass filled with ice
Garnish with an orange twist

Pour the mix into a Champagne flute and top with sparkling wine to make a Blossom Royale.

Silk Stocking

The watchwords here are silky and smooth – this is a cocktail to unwind with, the balm after a hectic day. It’s also a sleeper of a classic and when you first make it for your friends, they’ll be as impressed and unexpectedly delighted as they would be on a spontaneous night in with the voice of Dolly Parton and the spirit of Prince as your house guests.

60ml (2oz) tequila blanco
22.5ml (3/4oz) white crème de cacao
22.5ml (3/4oz) single (light) cream
7.5ml (1/4oz) grenadine

Ice: Cubed
Garnish: Chocolate and cinnamon powders
Equipment: Cocktail shaker, strainer

Fill a shaker with ice
Add all the ingredients
Shake vigorously to chill
Strain into a chilled glass
Garnish with a sprinkle of chocolate and cinnamon powders

If you don’t have tequila blanco then reposado is a decent substitute. I do prefer the lighter touch of blanco (unoaked), though, as it helps keep this drink curiously light.
