Abu Dhabi,United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi is the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates and on first glance appears to be a striking modern wonder. However look past the futuristic skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and endless shopping malls and you'll see that the cultures of an older society still remain. Before Abu Dhabi struck (black) gold with its rich oil reserves, it was at the centre of the pearl industry - you can see the traditional dhows used for both pearl diving and fishing along the harbour. The Heritage Village living museum offers a more in depth look at ancient cultures, while for an insight into today's way of life, head to Khalifa Park, a popular recreation landmark for residents and visitors.
