It’s baffling and thrilling in equal measure that Nafplio – one of the most beautiful towns in Greece – is something of an unknown gem. 

Blanketed by an exceptionally mild, sunny climate and found in the Peloponnese, it’s the perfect base from which to explore several fascinating places. The UNESCO sites of Epidaurus, Mycenae and Tiryns are all just a short drive away.

But how could you leave when there’s so much to see and do in town? Wander the winding narrow streets, smell the jasmine draping the Venetian buildings and admire the National Bank of Greece – a stunning example of rare Mycenaean Revival architecture.

Two towering hillside forts overlook Nafplio while Bourtzi, the island castle, guards the serene harbour bay. Just outside town, sweeping sandy beaches are lapped by warm waters. Work up an appetite with a gentle stroll, then tuck into regional dishes such as roast pork with crispy skin in one of the traditional local eateries.
