Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, the historic town of Lahaina offers a wonderful blend of art galleries, unique shops and restaurants and historic buildings - you can experience it all if you follow the Historic Trail.

About Durrës in Destinations

image alt

Durrës has long been a favourite seaside resort for Albanian families. Embark on one of our cruises to Durrës and beyond the beach you'll find a fascinating city of antiquities, museums and theatres. Founded in the 7th century BC, the port became an important merchant centre on the route linking Rome with Byzantium. With Durrës cruises you can explore ruins dating back to Roman times including the amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Balkans seating up to 20,000 spectators; an early...

St Nazaire in Destinations

image alt

St Nazaire is renowned for its ship building (Cunard's Queen Mary II was built here in 2003) after the port became the departure and arrival point for France's first transatlantic crossings in 1862. To compare the facilities of Oceana with those of early cruise ships, visit Escal'Atlantic (housed in the impenetrable German submarine base) and you'll step off one ship straight onto another - it's a life-size reconstruction of an early ocean liner. You can also explore L'Espadon, a real submarine...

About Flamborough Head in Destinations

image alt

Flamborough Head is one of the most spectacular areas of chalk cliffs in Britain. Soaring to 400 feet, they are also some of the highest. And these rugged white cliffs are home to a variety of over 200,000 nesting sea birds. There are two historic lighthouses on Flamborough Head. The oldest, The Light Tower, 78 feet high, was built in 1674. Although it was never lit, it's the earliest known lighthouse still in existence in the UK. The newer lighthouse, The Lighthouse, was built in 1806 and...

About Keelung in Destinations

image alt

In the early 17th century Keelung found its feet as a centre for military and commercial trade, continuing to do so through Spanish, Dutch and Qing Dynasty periods of rule. It was developed further still in the late 19th century when the Japanese arrived and as a result is now home to a number of key cultural sites including Ershawan Fort, Heping Island and Lovers Lake. But it's the dark that draws most visitors here for the Miaokou Night Market. And with a midnight departure, you too can...

About Katakolon in Destinations

image alt

The small Greek port of Katakolon was developed in the 19th century to serve the thriving local trade in currants. Today it is your starting block for Olympia - birthplace of the Olympic Games. A pretty town on the banks of the River Alpheios, Olympia lies only a short drive away from the port and its historic stadium - where the first Olympic torch was lit in 776 BC and is a fascinating site to explore. You can still see the marble starting blocks used by early athletes in the...

About Tripoli in Destinations

image alt

Libya is slowly opening up to the outside world and there is the beginnings of a tourism industry, with cruise passengers among the first to enjoy some of the most fascinating sites to be found in North Africa or anywhere around the Mediterranean. The capital and cruise port, Tripoli, is a typical North African city of narrow streets and lively souks. It also has a fascinating national museum but the real treasures are still out in the desert which covers most of this country. First,...

The town centre includes the 17th century Baroque church of Santa Baia de Arealonga, and the attractive Castelao Street. Built in the early 20th century, it's lined...

About Belem in Destinations

image alt

In nearby Rehaugene you can explore the 'Pyramids of the North' - six intriguing Bronze Age, earthen burial mounds. Belem boasts a collection of beautiful well-preserved colonial buildings, built during the extremely wealthy era of the 19th century Rubber Boom. And although the Basílica Santuario de Nazaré looks shabby...

About Beagle Channel in Destinations

image alt

The channel owes its name to the British ship the Beagle, upon which Charles Darwin explored the area in the early 1800s. It's a 150 mile channel of water that cuts through South America's Tierra del Fuego archipelago of islands, separating the main island in the north from the collection of small islands in the south. Its mysterious grey waters, into which glaciers leisurely tumble, is presided over by a group of majestic mountains and provides a home to sea lions, the Peale's dolphin and...

About Rijeka in Destinations

image alt

This cosmopolitan coastal city is famous for its annual carnival, Rijeka's theatres, museums and abundant history make cruises to Rijeka an intriguing destination at any time of the year. The unique Baroque rotunda of St Vitus Cathedral, dedicated to the port's Patron Saint and protector, is in the old town. He appears again in a relief on the early 16th century city flagpole outside the Municipal Palace close to the Church of St Jerome, once part of an Augustinian monastery complex. Further...

About Brindisi in Destinations

image alt

Found on Salento peninsula at the heel of Italy, the natural harbour of Brindisi is an important gateway to the East. Ancient mariners used its two Roman column - symbols of the city - as reference points into the port. Although one collapsed in the 16 th century, the other is still visible. Cruises to Brindisi have plenty to offer. In the Piazza Duomo stands the cathedral with its mosaic and baroque bell tower; the 12 th century remains of a once majestic church linked to the Knights...

About Halifax, Nova Scotia in Destinations

Halifax is the principal city of Nova Scotia and one of the most dramatically indented coastlines in the world. It is also one of the closest Canadian ports to Europe, hence its early prominence in transatlantic trade (Samuel Cunard was born here). When the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in April 1912, the rescue and...

About Luderitz in Destinations

image alt

The small town of Luderitz on Namibia's Atlantic Coast is famed locally for its stark, windswept beauty and the variety of its wildlife as the cold Benguela current keeps the waters chilly enough to attract seals and penguins.
