About Ephesus in Destinations

image alt

Kusadasi is a bustling successful port that provides excellent access to the extraordinary remains at Ephesus. If you are not on a tour, try hiring one of the huge gas-guzzling American cars (left by former servicemen) and turned into cabs by the enterprising locals. In Ephesus, enter the magnificent site of the Ancient City at the Magnesia Gate. Whilst Ephesus is now deserted and in ruins, the past glories come to life as the impressive array of temples, agoras, porticoes and fountains come...

About Ponta Delgada in Destinations

image alt

A strong Portuguese influence pervades Ponta Delgada from the stylish colonial architecture to the food and wine served in its restaurants.  But that should really come as no surprise as this is the main Portuguese Azores cruise port even if these remote Atlantic islands are 760 miles distant from their parent country. The capital of Sao Miguel, the largest of the nine mountaineous, thickly-forested Azores islands, Ponta Delgada is probably the most spectacularly beautiful, too. It...

About Heraklion in Destinations

image alt

The proud city of Heraklion is the modern capital of Crete, largest and most ruggedly beautiful of the Greek Isles. Just along the coast, you'll find the scrupulously renovated remains of Knossos, the Palace of King Minos and the island's capital under the Minoans. Here, the endless maze of salons, staircases and courtyards gave rise to the legend of the Labyrinth, housing the evil Minotaur at its heart. See the legend come vividly to life!

About Cherbourg in Destinations

image alt

Now officially known as Cherbourg-Octeville, having formed a union with the smaller city in 2000, Cherbourg has long been a gateway between Britain and France. Well worth a visit is Cherbourg's aquarium, allowing visitors to explore the many facets of underwater exploration. Another must see is the Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey Mont St Michel, perched on a rocky islet near the port. Alternatively simply sit at a traditional French cafe and enjoy a drink while watching the boats as they come...

About Gaeta in Destinations

image alt

The genteel town of Gaeta is one of the most beautiful cities in southern Italy. This small town's ancient walls, narrow alleys and seven fabulous sandy beaches, lie in a magnificent location on a sparkling bay. And it's 'the' place to get a feel for the best of southern Italy - great food, friendly locals and a sense of history that ties it all together. Once a defensive stronghold, this town is still partly fortified today. The imposing Angevine-Aragonese castle is currently used by the...

San Diego in Destinations

image alt

If you've been 'California dreaming' you'll love San Diego, located on South California's Pacific coast. See the dream come alive in its immaculate beaches, tanned surfers and inline skaters and soak up its casual, friendly vibe. With the city rimmed by mountains and situated across 200 canyons, San Diego's topography and location is amazing. Nowhere is this more evident than Balboa Park - a sprawling 1,200-acre urban park which is home to gardens, walking trails, museums, theatres and the...

About Progreso in Destinations

image alt

The port city of Progreso is famous for its 7km wharf, the longest in Mexico and reputedly the world. Along the main promenade you'll find a bustling scene popular with locals, who come to enjoy the beach with its fine white sand and emerald green sea. Take a seat at one of the many thatched-roof restaurants or palapas, and enjoy some distinctive Yucatan cuisine such as seafood soup, fish cooked in banana leaves or, for the more adventurous; ceviche de chivitas (river snail). From Progreso...

About Palermo in Destinations

image alt

Sicilys capital, Palermo perches at the foot of Monte Pellgrino at the heart of a large natural harbour.  Founded in the 5th century, it has alternately enjoyed and endured one of the most colourful histories of any Mediterranean city. Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Arabs, Goths, Vandals have all come and gone, leaving their mark on the population as well as the architecture. Despite being a lively modern city where the million inhabitants going about their daily business with the...

About Cozumel in Destinations

image alt

The worlds most popular cruise port, Cozumel, is just a small (12 miles long) island off Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula but it has a vibrant, pulsating Latin heart. Everywhere is all action and activity from the music-playing downtown bars, cafés and shops to the watersports on offer from the glorious beaches. Probably the best beach is at the Chankanab National Park which also boasts a beautiful botanical garden with 800 plant species. Best of all, though, is that it has a pool linked by an...

About Nassau in Destinations

image alt

Superb beaches, straw markets, rum punch-serving bars and cafés, the Bahamian capital Nassau has all the classic Caribbean attractions plus something extra - its own piece of Paradise. That is Paradise Island - a wonderfully over-the-top resort with flashy casinos and hotels, one even with its own shark pool. It is a boat ride away across Nassau Harbour while other boats will take you to Coral World Marine Park or to Blue Lagoon where you can swim with the dolphins. Nassaus British heritage...

Suva in Destinations

image alt

The capital of Fiji is Suva, a beautiful harbour city built on a hilly peninsula, which stretches out into the sea. Although Suva is the commercial and political centre of Fiji, and the largest city in the South Pacific, its tall modern buildings are beautifully balanced by its rich traditional colonial architecture. There is plenty to do and see in this exotic destination. You can stroll through Thurston Gardens, next to the official residence of the President of the Republic of Fiji, and...

About Marmaris in Destinations

image alt

As the soaring pine-clad mountains which frame this stunning natural harbour come into view, you'll be instantly mesmerised by Marmaris. But this Turkish jewel is not just a Mecca for yachties and beach lovers - there is also a bustling town worth visiting. Here, you can lose yourself in the old shopping bazaar, soak up the atmosphere of a 16th century hilltop fortress or watch the world go by in the palm-lined marina, which has a definite Riveria feel. Brimming with history, there are dozens...

About Lisbon in Destinations

image alt

Some of the best views of the Portuguese capital come as your ship cruises along the Tagus River. You pass the Belem Tower and the impressive Monument to the Discoveries with its statue of Henry the Navigator before arriving at the Lisbon cruise terminal. Although small for a European capital, this city does sprawl a little so you would do best to concentrate on three districts - Baixa, Bairro Alto and Alfama, each with its own distinctive style, making Lisbon cruises a must see. Baixa has...

About Nessebur in Destinations

image alt

The ancient town of Nessebur lies on a small, rocky peninsular in the Black Sea, connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Truly picturesque, its narrow cobblestone streets, period wooden houses and medieval churches tell the story of its rich history, which dates back two millennia. Be seduced by the romantic atmosphere, as you explore its UNESCO protected old quarter. At almost every turn you will come across one of its many beautiful churches, whose ornamental facades decorate the...
