Botanical Gardens Experience
Port
Fort de France, Martinique
Activity Level
moderate
Duration
4:15 Hours
Habitation Anse Latouche, which dates back to 1643, is one of the island’s oldest plantations. Unfortunately, it was totally destroyed by the 1902 volcanic eruption. Today however, its ruins are the fascinating site of Martinique Zoo, home to monkeys, jaguars, lorikeets, and hundreds of other creatures. Wandering around the grounds you’ll see ruins of houses, the old distillery and the indigo workshop, interspersed with striking tropical plants. You’ll also visit St Pierre, the Paris of the Caribbean, which was also destroyed in the eruption, and Balata Church, an exact replica of the Sacré-Coeur in Paris.
